Louisiana Sales Tax Guide

This tax guide provides a detailed and technical, yet easy-to-read, overview of the state sales tax rules for BOLD Precious Metals in Louisiana. BOLD is now required to collect state sales tax in Louisiana. The following information details the current state requirements for Louisiana.

"In Louisiana, the sales tax rules for precious metals depend on the type of item"

Fully Exempt if Total Order Amount is Greater than $1000:

  1. Rare or antique coins, once used as legal tender in the United States or other countries, whose sales price is based on rarity, demand, condition, and mintage. Uncirculated and proof coins fall under this category.

  2. Rare or antique coins made from refined gold or silver, once used as legal tender in the United States or other countries, whose sales price is based on rarity, demand, condition, and mintage.

Tax Exempt:

  1. Precious metal coins crafted from refined gold, silver, platinum, or palladium and produced in various nations, whose worth is influenced by the ever-changing market value of these valuable metals. According to the rules outlined in 26 USCS § 408(m), these coins can be added to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and are commonly purchased as investment instruments.

  2. Bars, ingots, or other forms containing refined gold of 99.5% purity, refined silver of 99.9% purity, refined platinum of 99.95% purity, or refined precious metals of 99.95% purity or greater.

Taxable at State Sales Tax Rate:

  1. Paper currency, formerly accepted as official payment in the United States and other nations, now holds value determined by its scarcity, market demand, and state of preservation.

  2. Coins made from refined precious metals minted in the United States or other countries, commonly bought as investments. Their value is linked to the fluctuating market price of precious metals and they are eligible to be held within an IRA under 26 USCS § 408(m).

  3. These bars, ingots, or other forms contain refined precious metals with a purity of 90% or higher but fall short of meeting the minimum fineness standards. They encompass refined gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
