Lincoln Wheat Cent 5 oz Silver Round

This 5 oz silver round issued by Golden State Mint (GSM) is really remarkable, considering the history of the US one cent coin. The round is dated 1909, the year when the Indian Head cent was retired, and the Lincoln cent introduced. GSM, however, took the history of that original 1909 Lincoln cent a step further when designing this silver round.

Highlights

  • Lincoln Wheat Cent 5 oz Silver Round.
  • Produced by Golden State Mint.
  • Contains 5 ounces of 999 fine silver BU.
  • Design replicates the extremely rare 1909 Lincoln one cent produced in the San Francisco Mint with the designer's initials.
  • Obverse features a replica of the original Lincoln Wheat Cent, with the right-facing portrait of President Lincoln designed by Victor David Brenner. Inscriptions include "IN GOD WE TRUST . LIBERTY . 1909 . S."
  • Reverse displays the two wheat stalks to the left and right rim. Inscriptions include "GOLDEN STATE MINT . FIVE TROY OZ . 999 FINE SILVER . V.D.B.".

Controversy!

Controversy quickly developed in 1909 as the new Lincoln cent began releasing to the public. It was only then that it was noticed that the initials of the designer, Victor David Brenner had been prominently added to the coin's reverse. Increasing negative public opinion soon swayed the mint, and they quickly removed the initials (VDB). Just under 28 million were produced that included the initials.

Interestingly, only 484,000 of these were struck in the San Francisco Mint. Even at the time it was considered highly likely that the S-VDB mintage was destined to become collector's pieces, and that they did! Even to this day, these rare Lincoln cents continue to be that one coin every collector of US circulated coinage covets above all.

Popular Design

With the release of this Lincoln Wheat Cent 5 oz Silver Round, the Golden State Mint has produced a fine replica of the original 1909 Lincoln cent with the San Francisco Mint mark and Victor David Brenner's initials. The design and production quality of this round is sure to please!
