Design Details

The obverse of the coin, created by George T. Morgan, features Lady Liberty modeled after Anna Willess Williams. Her gaze toward the horizon symbolizes hope and freedom. She wears a Phrygian cap, a classical symbol of liberty, adorned with a hairband inscribed “LIBERTY.” The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arcs across the top, with the date “1896” at the bottom.

The reverse showcases the Great Seal of the United States, with a bold eagle clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. A laurel wreath surrounds the eagle’s lower half, and above its head appears the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The rim bears the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

History & Origin

First minted in 1878, the Morgan Dollar series continued through 1904 and briefly returned in 1921. Struck at several U.S. Mint locations—Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and later Denver—the series is one of the most celebrated in American coinage. The 1896 issue, minted in Philadelphia, is among the most sought-after by collectors.
