World War I

This global conflict, which lasted from 1914 to 1918, devastated the world. One of the countries that was highly affected was Great Britain. The US stepped forward to assist Great Britain by selling them silver.

The Pittman Act, 1918

The US government signed the Pittman Act on April 23, 1918, to sell silver to Britain. This act authorized the US to sell silver by melting up to 350 million silver dollars.

Implementation

As a result of the Pittman Act, around 270,232,722 silver dollars, which at that time were the timeless Morgan Dollars, were melted. This amounted to 47% of all Morgan dollars struck up to that point!

Replacement Requirement

The Act also stated the replacement of the Morgan Silver Dollars, which was to be minted from the silver bought from American Mining companies. This series of events marked the extending legacy of American coinage and the birth of Peace dollars!

The Birth of Peace Dollar

Initial Idea

After the devastating after-effects of World War I, the people needed a symbol of peace. This idea to introduce a coin that symbolizes peace is often traced back to the article in The Numismatist by Frank Duffield in November 1918.

Farran Zerbe’s Proposal

After Duffield’s suggestion for a victory coin for peace, Farran Zerbe, in August 1920, wrote to the American Numismatic Association (ANA) an initiative for a peace coin. This paper introduces a new design that symbolizes peace and victory if the silver dollar production is resumed.

Congressional Support

The bill by Farran Zerbe was supported by the Congressmen, and thus, the Peace Dollar was initiated on May 9, 1921, under the Peace Dollar bill.

Design Competition

Under the US Commission of Fine Arts, a competition was held to determine the design of the Peace Dollar. Chairman Charles Moore and renowned engraver James Earle Fraser led the competition.

Winner

In an interesting fashion, the Italian sculptor Anthony De Francisci won the competition. He featured the Lady Liberty radiate crown effigy, modeled by his wife, Teresa, along with the American bald eagle on the reverse.

Production Period and Key Dates of the Peace Dollar

Initial Minting:	The Peace Dollar began its legacy in the year 1921.
Continuous Production:	From its first production, the peace dollar was minted extensively and annually from 1921 to 1928.
Final Minting Period:	Production was resumed in 1934, and the dollar was minted until 1935, as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had proclaimed.

Key Collectible Dates

1921 High Relief and Proof Dollars:

In the first year issue, strikes in high relief were lowered after a year to reduce damage on the dies. The proof dollars were considerably valuable, ranging from $300 to $50,000.

1928-P:

Rarity, due to less production of only 360,649 coins, makes this 1928-P Peace Dollar collectible. Prices can go up to $500 based on condition.

1934-S:

In the last year of mintage, the Peace dollar was minted in San Francisco. Around 1 million coins were struck, and prices ranged from $80 to $2,000 depending on condition.

1927-S, 1928-S, 1924-S:

All minted in San Francisco, these pieces are highly sought after for their lower mintage and availability of higher-grade pieces.
