Why did the United States mint create the Gold Eagle series?

American Gold Eagle coins were authorized for production by the United States Congress with the passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. First minted in 1986, these coins are popular gold bullion coins investors and collectors love. The US Mint produces these coins in four different weight categories – tenth ounce, quarter ounce, half ounce, and one ounce. Depending on your investor purpose and budget, you can choose a coin you want to invest in.

The American Gold Eagle coins are made of 22-karat gold with small portions of alloy. Each of these coins contains 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and the rest copper.

The designer of these coins, Saint-Gaudens, has a popular $20 face value gold piece called the “Double Eagle”. This design was commissioned by president Theodore Roosevelt. Minted from 1907 to 1933, it is still considered one of America’s most beautiful coins. The obverse of Lady Liberty on these gold coins is inspired by the same design.

As the American Eagle Coin Program turned 35 in 2021, the US Mint commemorated the same by giving the reverse a new design. This is when the United States Mint made changes to the portrayal of the reverse and other design elements like, sun rays, torch, and stars.

The mint also added the portrait of an eagle to the coins’ reverse in 2021. Over time, the Eagle coins have become increasingly secure with features like reeded edge variation.

These coins come in four denominations and four sizes, which gives each a different market value:

  • One Ounce Coins: Their face value is $50, and their diameter is 32.70 mm

  • Half Ounce Coins: Their face value is $25, and their diameter is 27 mm

  • Quarter Ounce Coins: Their face value is $10, and their diameter is 22 mm

  • One-tenth Ounce Coins: Their face value is $5, and their diameter is 16.50 mm

Design Features of the Gold Coin!

Obverse Side

On the obverse of the American Gold Eagle coins, you will find a full length figure of Lady Liberty with her hair and robe flowing freely, the iconic symbols of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Her right hand holds a torch, and the left hand holds an olive branch. Where the olive branch is the symbol of peace and torch represents new beginnings. The background displays the capitol building and the rising sun. The inscriptions on this side include “LIBERTY,” the year of production, and the mint mark.

Reverse Side

The reverse design of this coin is divided into Type 1 and Type 2. The Type 1 design for the reverse of the American bald Eagle gold coin was created by Miley Busiek in 1986. The reverse of the Gold coin shows the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. In 2021, the US Mint introduced a brand new design featuring a close-up head portrait of an eagle. The new Type 2 reverse design of the coin designed by Jennie Norris features a family of nesting bald eagles, where the female eagle protects the young hatchling and the male approaches landing.

American Gold Eagles BU

If you wish to purchase lighter coins, you can choose fraction American Gold Eagles that weigh ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. The denominations of these three coins are $25, $10, and $5, respectively. NGC Certified Gold Eagles

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) is a popular third-party grading company many investors look up to. It gives various coins and collectibles assessments, guarantees, ratings, and conditions. An NGC verdict is considered valuable in the bullion market. Its grading system involves a 70-point grading scale to determine the condition of a coin or a collectible, the highest rating being MS-70.

NGC-certified American Gold Eagles, as the name suggests, are the coins with NGC’s stamp of approval. Thanks to the reputation of NGC, these coins attract several investors and collectors every year. In fact, you can get some of these NGC-certified American Gold Eagle coins for a price more affordable than newly minted coins due to their lower grades.

When you invest in an NGC-certified gold coin, you get the assurance of buying an authentic coin that carries a superior aesthetic appeal. There are other grading services like the Professional coin grading service (PCGS) that grades the Gold eagles.

Proof Gold Eagles

The Proof American Gold Eagles look shinier and smoother than the regular coins. These coins carries the mint mark "W" as they were struck at the West Point mint. They go through a specialized minting process that gives them mirrored surfaces.

While minting these coins, mint workers work with coin blanks that are thoroughly polished to attain a smooth, mirror-like appearance. They feed these blanks into dedicated presses containing polished dies with a matte treatment.

Moreover, Proof American Gold Eagles are struck twice to attain sharper details. These proof coins come in specialized packages designed especially for collectors.

Limited production, perfect finish, and detailed presentation set proof Gold Eagles apart from the regular coins. The scarcity of these coins also increases their collectible value.

Premiums on American Gold Eagles

It is common for investors and collectors to study the ongoing gold spot price before buying bullion coins. However, not all gold coins having the same metal content and weight carry the same price. The difference lies in the coin premium.

In simple words, gold coin premium is the difference between the ongoing gold spot price and the price at which you can purchase a specific coin. For example, if the current gold spot price is $1,000 and you buy an American Gold Eagle coin for $1,070, you pay $70 as a premium.
