The new 1/4 oz Britannia Gold Coin 2023 is a momentous release from The Royal Mint, the world's oldest continuous minting shop since 886 AD.
This is a very historic milestone coin, as it is the first Royal Mint Britannia to feature the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings.
It was minted from .9999 fine gold with a British government face value of £25 and includes four built-in anti-counterfeiting security features that led The Royal Mint to call the Britannia the "world's most visually secure bullion coin."
It's a defining purchase for any collector or investor who desires a quarter-ounce gold coin that embodies 1,100 years of gold minting tradition, historic first-issue status, and the highest commercial gold purity.
The Obverse Profile — First Coinage Portrait of King Charles III
On the obverse side of this coin is the sculptor's first numismatic portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, an official portrait by Martin Jennings, which was created by the sculptor in left profile without a crown.
The security pattern, a guilloché, is a series of interwoven circles on the background of the obverse field, giving the surface depth, added visual complexity, and an additional anti-counterfeiting element.
The face value and the title of the King are abbreviated in Latin (Dei Gratia Rex, Fidei Defensor: By the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith) and are also inscribed in the inscription.
The Reverse Profile — Philip Nathan's Britannia with Four Security Features
The reverse features Philip Nathan's popular design of the Britannia, which was first introduced to The Royal Mint in 1987 when the bullion Britannia series began.
A helmeted Lady Britannia in full armor, holding a trident in her right hand (British naval power and command of the sea) and a shield in her left hand, with the Union Flag on it (Protection of the realm) and an olive branch (Peace through strength).
On the reverse side, it has been inscribed: "BRITANNIA · 2023 · 1/4 oz · 999 FINE Gold." The designer's name "NATHAN" is towards the bottom edge.
There are four security features on the back:
The first appearance of Britannia was on coins of Emperor Hadrian, AD 119, as a personification of Rome's new British province.
She was resurrected for Charles II's coinage in 1672 and has been featured on the coins of all British monarchs ever since—for 350 years—making her the longest-surviving on British sheet money to date!
Philip Nathan's design was selected to debut the Britannia bullion coin series in 1987 not only because it embodied her three attributes but also because it mirrored them in a manner that would appeal to everyone.
They were not just ornamentation but an expression of national identity in gold.
On 8th September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died on her birthday, 70 years on the throne. Her portrait was the final one on the 2022 Britannia.
Every 2023 Royal Mint coin is a first-year coin of historical record, as the 2023 Britannia is the first to include King Charles III.
These coins have always been in strong demand on the secondary market, since the historical significance of these coins is permanently set and can't be replicated.
The Royal Mint was first established in 886 AD (more than 1100 years ago). It was formerly in the Tower of London but moved to its new purpose-built home in Llantrisant in Wales in 1968.
The hallmark is a stamp that is universally acknowledged by precious metals dealers, banks, IRA custodians and government mints in the world's largest markets as the United Kingdom's hallmark.
