The 1 oz Saint-Gaudens Silver Round from SilverTowne brings one of the most admired designs in American coinage history to a full troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
Inspired by Augustus Saint-Gaudens' legendary Lady Liberty design from the $20 Double Eagle gold coin, this round offers collectors and investors the opportunity to own a classic American motif without the high premiums associated with historic gold coins.Originally created between 1905 and 1907, the Saint-Gaudens Liberty design is widely regarded as one of the finest achievements in American numismatic art.Its influence continues today, as the same Liberty figure has appeared on the American Gold Eagle bullion coin since 1986.
The obverse features Lady Liberty striding confidently forward in full front-facing relief. In her right hand, she raises a torch symbolizing enlightenment, while her left hand carries an olive branch representing peace. Her flowing robe and hair move with the wind as rays of sunlight radiate behind her figure.Surrounding Liberty are 50 stars representing the 50 states of the United States.Unlike the original Double Eagle coin, SilverTowne's version contains no obverse inscriptions, allowing the iconic imagery to take center stage.
The result is a clean, recognizable tribute to one of the most celebrated designs ever produced by the United States Mint.
The reverse features an American bald eagle perched on a cluster of olive branches. The calm and balanced composition serves as a fitting counterpart to the motion and energy displayed on the obverse.Above the eagle appears the inscription:"ONE OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER"Below is the SilverTowne name and logo, which incorporates a pick axe into the letter "T"—a distinctive design element long associated with the mint. The round also features a reeded edge, adding a traditional finishing touch commonly found on many bullion products.
The Liberty design originated from a personal initiative by President Theodore Roosevelt, who believed American coinage should rival the beauty of the ancient Greek and Roman coins he admired. To achieve that vision, Roosevelt enlisted renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of the leading artists of the American Renaissance movement.
Educated at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Saint-Gaudens brought a classical artistic approach that elevated American coin design to a new level.
His vision for Liberty was ambitious. Rather than a flat design, he created an exceptionally high-relief figure with the sculptural depth typically seen on ancient medallions.
While visually stunning, the design proved difficult for the U.S. Mint to produce efficiently.Early test strikes of the Double Eagle required as many as 11 strikes per coin to fully bring out the design details. Although approximately 12,000 high-relief examples were produced in 1907, the process was too time-consuming for circulating coinage.
To solve the problem, Chief Engraver Charles Barber modified the dies, reducing the relief so the coin could be struck in a single press. This lower-relief version entered regular production and remained in circulation from 1907 through 1933.Saint-Gaudens never witnessed the long-term success of his masterpiece. He passed away in August 1907, only weeks before the Double Eagle entered full production. Today, his Liberty design remains one of the most celebrated works in American numismatic history.SilverTowne's silver round preserves the spirit of that original vision, allowing collectors to enjoy the design in an affordable bullion format.
SilverTowne was founded in Winchester, Indiana, by Leon Hendrickson and his wife, Ruhama.According to company history, the business began with a simple cigar box used for storing and trading coins.Over the course of more than 75 years, SilverTowne grew into one of the largest and most respected private mints in the United States. The company produces silver rounds, custom medallions, and branded bullion products for collectors, investors, and dealers nationwide. In October 2024, SilverTowne further expanded its capabilities by acquiring the manufacturing assets of Regency Mint, strengthening its production capacity for fractional and proof-quality bullion products.
The SilverTowne Saint-Gaudens is a privately minted silver round rather than a government-issued coin.As a result, it carries no face value and avoids many of the production costs associated with sovereign coinage. Each round contains one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver, meeting the IRS minimum purity requirement for silver held in self-directed precious metals IRAs.For buyers who appreciate the beauty and history of the Saint-Gaudens design but prefer bullion pricing over collectible coin premiums, this round offers an attractive alternative.
