2024 1 oz Tokelau Untamed Crocodile Silver Coin (BU)

The 2024 Tokelau Untamed Landscapes Saltwater Crocodile Silver Coin introduces ABC Mint's new Untamed Landscapes series and marks the mint's first legal tender coin program issued under a sovereign authority. Struck from 1 troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, this coin is issued as legal tender of Tokelau with a face value of 5 New Zealand Dollars and is presented in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Limited to a worldwide mintage of 175,000 coins, it combines investment-grade silver with a design inspired by one of Oceania's most formidable predators. Each coin arrives in a protective plastic flip, while larger quantities are packaged in tubes of 20 coins or Monster Boxes containing 500 coins.

No Certificate of Authenticity is included. With a purity of .9999 fine silver, the coin exceeds the IRS minimum requirement of .999 silver for self-directed precious metals IRAs and qualifies as IRA-eligible bullion.

The Design: Obverse and Reverse

Obverse – King Charles III

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of King Charles III created by artist Dan Thorne. Unlike many traditional Commonwealth coin portraits, the King is depicted without a crown, giving the design a more contemporary appearance. Surrounding inscriptions include CHARLES III · TOKELAU · 5 DOLLARS · 2024, identifying the issuing authority, denomination, and year of issue. As a dependent territory of New Zealand, Tokelau recognizes the British monarch as Head of State. For that reason, King Charles III appears on the obverse of official Tokelau legal tender coinage.

Reverse – The Saltwater Crocodile

The reverse showcases a powerful saltwater crocodile in left profile with its jaws fully open. The design captures the animal's raw strength and reinforces the series theme of wildlife thriving in truly untamed environments. Near the upper edge of the coin, the outline of Australia helps place the scene within the broader Oceania region. Additional inscriptions include OCEANIA · UNTAMED LANDSCAPES · 1 OZ ABC MINT · 9999 FINE SILVER, along with the ABC Mint logo. Together, these elements identify the series, weight, purity, and manufacturer while framing the dramatic central image.

The Saltwater Crocodile: One of Nature's Ultimate Predators

The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) holds the distinction of being the largest living reptile on Earth. Mature males can reach lengths of 6 to 7 meters (around 20 feet) and weigh as much as 1,000 kilograms. Found throughout northern Australia and much of Southeast Asia, these reptiles inhabit coastal waterways, estuaries, river mouths, and mangrove systems where they dominate the local food chain. What makes crocodiles especially remarkable is their evolutionary history. Crocodilian ancestors first appeared more than 200 million years ago, and the group survived the mass extinction event that ended the age of dinosaurs roughly 66 million years ago. Their body structure has remained largely unchanged because it proved extraordinarily effective. Few creatures on Earth can claim such a long and successful evolutionary record. During much of the 20th century, saltwater crocodile populations declined sharply due to extensive hunting for their valuable skins. Conservation efforts, particularly in Australia beginning in the 1970s, helped reverse that trend. Today, populations across northern Australia have recovered significantly and are often cited as one of the world's notable wildlife conservation success stories. Opening the Untamed Landscapes series with the saltwater crocodile is a fitting choice. It is one of Oceania's most iconic predators, known for its size, patience, and unmatched ability as an ambush hunter.

The Untamed Landscapes Series

The Untamed Landscapes collection represents ABC Mint's first legal tender coin series issued under a sovereign authority. The Saltwater Crocodile serves as the inaugural release, setting the tone for a program dedicated to Oceania's distinctive wildlife. Future releases are expected to feature the Kiwi, Thorny Lizard, Kangaroo, and Sailfish.

Each coin will follow the same basic format: 1 troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, Tokelau legal tender status, and a reverse design celebrating a species native to the Oceania region.

About Tokelau

Tokelau is a remote territory of New Zealand located in the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 500 kilometers north of Samoa. The territory consists of three coral atolls—Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo—and has a population of roughly 1,500 residents spread across a land area of only about 12 square kilometers. Because Tokelau uses the New Zealand Dollar as its official currency, the coin carries a denomination of 5 NZD. As a territory under New Zealand's sovereignty, Tokelau also recognizes the British monarch as Head of State, which explains the presence of King Charles III on the obverse.

About ABC Mint
