The Royal Canadian Mint celebrates 150 years of Canada's confederation with the release of this 2017 1 oz Gold Canadian Voyageur (150 Special Edition). Harkening back to 1935, and Canada's first circulating silver dollar, Voyageur, this special edition brings back the original reverse design. Production on the original Voyageur Silver dollar ended in 1986, and is still considered one Canada's most popular coinage designs.
Designed by Emanuel Hahn, of Toronto, for the 1935 introduction, the reverse featured a voyageur (independent fur trader), and native man in a canoe, with bundles of fur pelts. This was a tribute to the early fur trade, which was foundational to the emerging nation.
This image is encircled with a narrow band at the rim, which displays the distinctive radial line security feature. The inscriptions within the band include, "Canada 2017 Fine Gold 1 oz Or Pur." Above the image is the purity of 9999, and below is "150 Years Ans." The security-enhanced maple leaf privy with "17" is to the right. The obverse side features the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II, and the face value.
This a strikingly beautiful coin, and with its commemorative historical significance and very low limited mintage of only 15,000, you shouldn't delay!
The first security feature includes a small textured maple leaf, micro-engraved with laser technology on the reverse side. It displays the last two digits of the release year. This was introduced to the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf (GML) for the 2013 release.
For the 2015 release, a second visual security feature was added to the GML. At the same time, the smaller fractional sizes also received both new security features. This second feature includes the radial lines in the background field on both the obverse and reverse.
These lines have been precisely machined to within microns on the master tooling to ensure reproducibility from die to die and coin to coin. The uniqueness of the line width and pitch gives a characteristic look, creating a light-diffracting pattern specific to this coin. These features combined represent the true cutting-edge of coin security.
