It is one of six final silver coins in Scottsdale Mint's Biblical Series, an extraordinary 10-year numismatic project that began with releases of 6 silver coins each year. This coin is one of the most artistically and theologically meaningful in the entire series with only one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, antique finish and struck on a rimless blank.
This coin is an official government coin, is legal tender in the country of Niue and has a face value of NZ$2. It is produced by Scottsdale Mint (ISO 9001:2015 certified), one of North America's most respected fine and high art collectible silver producers based in Arizona, who are known for their museum-quality finishes applied to the production of precious metal coins.
It's a coin with a built-in historical end, 2024 being the very last and the definitive year of the whole series, and the Resurrection being the final chapter of the Biblical story, the last act of redemption.
In 2015, Scottsdale Mint began the Biblical Series with a vision: to create a continuous numismatic series of the entire 241 wood engraving project by Gustave Doré from 1866, six new coins per year for a 10-year planned run.
In the end, this is one of the greatest collector coin programs ever attempted. By 2024, the series had been able to produce 60 different designs, from the creation stories in the Book of Genesis to the New Testament Gospels, the Old Testament Patriarchs, prophets, kings and a complete life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
| Year | Coins Released | Cumulative Total |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 6 | 6 |
| 2016 | 6 | 12 |
| 2017 | 6 | 18 |
| 2018 | 6 | 24 |
| 2019 | 6 | 30 |
| 2020 | 6 | 36 |

| 2022 | 6 | 48 |
| 2023 | 6 | 54 |
| 2024 (Final Year) | 6 | 60 |
Each coin in every year has the same format: same weight, purity, denomination, mintage (1,499), finish and packaging but has a completely new design on the reverse side. This program ends in 2024 with the final year of coins. Scottsdale Mint will no longer make Biblical Series coins.
The 2024 versions are: The Resurrection, The Last Judgement, Walls of Jericho Fall Down, Philistines Return the Ark, Jonah and the Large Fish and some final year designs, which are all climactic points from the entire Biblical canon.
This is the end of a 10-year journey for collectors who have been following the series since 2015. New collectors will find that the series is finite and closed, meaning that there's no risk of it being opened up for an even larger collection.
All the coins of the Biblical Series are illustrated from the work of Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré, a French artist, printmaker, illustrator, and sculptor, who created one of the most famous and popular Bible-based visual interpretations of all time.
Doré was born in Strasbourg in 1832 and was a prolific storyteller of the visual kind, producing illustrations for more than 200 books throughout his career, such as the Divine Comedy of Dante, Paradise Lost by Milton and Don Quixote by Cervantes. His most important success, however, was when he produced 241 wood engravings for a deluxe French-language version of the Vulgate Bible, simultaneously published by Mame in Tours, France and Cassell & Company in London.
The 1866 Bible project was the culmination of Doré's remarkable artistic skill. He found in the series "an almost endless series of intensely dramatic events," as one modern scholar put it, ranging from the Tower of Babel to the plagues of Egypt, the death of Samson to the resurrection of Christ. His New Testament illustrations accounted for 81 plates, of which 62 were devoted to the four Gospels, and illustrated the life of Jesus from his birth to his resurrection in a dramatic style which influenced the way generations of Christians and non-Christians saw the Biblical world.
Doré's personal qualities and artistic sensibilities — his radiant designs of God's divine light piercing through darkness and his towering architectural scale, monumental crowd compositions and emotional expression — were ideal for the high relief silver coin format. The Scottsdale Mint's resolution to use Doré's engravings as the standard pattern for the Biblical Series was not only an artistic decision, but a theological one: so many of the illustrations are now so familiar that viewers realize they are part of a Bible story without being told where they came from.
The 2024 Resurrection coin is a translation of a 158-year-old engraving that is one of the most popular images of Western religious art — and will live for centuries more.
On the back of the 2024 Resurrection coin, Jesus Christ is shown rising from his sealed tomb — a scene that is described in all four of the Gospels of the New Testament, done in the dramatic manner of Doré's original engraving.
The composition depicts the exact moment of emergence: Christ emerging with radiant light bursting through the stone-closed chamber, the large burial stone having been rolled away, the presence of the angels suggested by the light-filled atmosphere around Christ. Rimless blank means that the design will fit the whole face of the coin, without having to cut out the rims, and will therefore give the same full frame effect as the original engraving.
The antique finish, which was hand-applied by a team of artisans and technicians led by master sculptor D'Almeida Novissimo, is done on purpose to provide what is essentially the "feel" of an object of antiquity. Both antique brushing and distressing of the fields and devices was carried out, with the dark patina of the proof-like finish enhancing the shadow elements and the high-relief elements of the design standing in sharp relief to the rest of the design, exactly as in Doré's engraving style, using the light-dark chiaroscuro technique.
The only reverse text is: THE RESURRECTION, which is clean and plain, its design the primary element.
The Resurrection is the heart and soul of the Christian faith, the event around which all other events of Scripture converge; Christian theology says the whole story of scripture revolves around the Resurrection.
The Gospel stories tell of the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth and his death on what the Church calls Good Friday, in a sealed tomb bought by Joseph of Arimathea. On the first day of the week (three days later), a group of women, including Mary Magdalene, went to the tomb at dawn and came to anoint the body, but found the stone rolled away, and the tomb empty.
The Resurrection stories tell of Jesus' appearances to his disciples and followers for forty days after the empty tomb was discovered, to Mary Magdalene first, then to Peter, then to the Twelve, and then to a crowd that, according to Paul, comprised more than five hundred people at a time (1 Corinthians 15:6). The appearances in the Gospel, in the writings of Paul, are the very support on which the Christian movement is founded.
The theological implications are too profound to overlook: the Resurrection was not just a miracle; it was the proof of Jesus's claims, the triumph over death, the assurance of eternal life for those who believed. It was the event that changed the lives of a group of scattered disciples following the crucifixion into the movement that grew into the predominant religion of the Roman Empire within three centuries.
Doré's engraving of the Resurrection is filled with this victory over death: light and movement, bursting out. The scene's theological significance is fully felt on the coin, which is rendered in high relief on an antiqued silver field.
On the obverse, there is the official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III in left-profile relief (without a crown), typical for male monarchs on Commonwealth coinage.
The portrait was created by the British artist and coin designer, Jody Clark, who holds one of the most valuable credentials in modern numismatics – the first official design of the portrait of a new British monarch for Commonwealth coinage, the final design of the official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was used on Commonwealth coinage from 2015 until her death in 2022.
Characteristic of Clark's portrait of Charles III is the King's distinctive features depicted in clean, formal relief, the official effigy of the countries of the Commonwealth, including Niue.
