The 2026 1 oz British Tudor Beasts: Royal Dragon Gold Coin is the ninth in The Royal Mint's renowned Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, which consists of 10 gold coins designed to celebrate the legendary heraldic dragon that has symbolized Wales and the Tudor dynasty's bloodline for over 500 years.
The dragon is fierce and imposing, proudly holding a shield with the Beaufort Portcullis badge, a historic symbol closely associated with the Beaufort, who was always a great champion of the Tudors. After Henry VII's triumph at the Battle of Bosworth field, he used the Royal Dragon as a symbol of the Tudor dynasty's Welsh heritage. The animal was later incorporated into the splendid heraldic statues created for the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace in celebration of the marriage of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour.

Ten stone guardians or King's Beasts decorate the main entrance to Hampton Court Palace, the Moat Bridge, built by King Henry VIII. These ten Royal Tudor Beasts Collection coins are all inspired by one of these stone beasts: animals of power and heraldry that have guarded the entrance of Hampton Court since the Tudor reign.
In 2022, The Royal Tudor Beasts from The Royal Mint was launched, following on from The Queen's Beasts series. This much-anticipated 10-coin series honors the magnificent creatures of royal coat of arms that guarded the Tudor dynasty, one release at a time, picturing the beasts that were found at the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, the forebears of Henry VIII's claim to the English throne.

This coin has a special link to the Welsh national identity which the other Tudor Beasts lack – the dragon continues to be the star of the Welsh flag today and it is as much a tribute to the Welsh nation as the Tudor dynasty that adopted it.

Reverse: David Lawrence's Royal Dragon
The back of the coin is designed by the well-known sculptor and illustrator, David Lawrence, in detail interprets the Royal Dragon sculpture. The Royal Dragon's exquisite, uncircumstanced finish brings to life the mythic figure who was once regarded as a symbol of power.The Royal Dragon is depicted with outstretched wings and a quartered heraldic shield, the dragon's mythic presence captured in a brilliant uncircumstanced finish.
The coin is set against the surface animation background of the dragon, which adds an extra security feature to the coin. It is a texture treatment anti-counterfealing process applied to the field behind the dragon figure throughout the Tudor Beasts series that provides depth and an added layer of authenticity that traditional flat-field coins do not have.
The outer coin reveals information regarding the coin's weight, purity, year-date and the inscription "ROYAL DRAGON".
Obverse: King Charles III by Martin Jennings
On the front of the coin is a portrait of King Charles III without a crown, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings, and the monetary value. The portrait is inscribed around the edge with "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS".
Jennings' portrait of the King, which features no Crown, has been used since the start of the Tudor Beasts series in 2023 for the Bull of Clarence.
