This new Republic of Chad release in the incredibly unique and popular Egyptian Relic Series is produced by Scottsdale Mint. This coin is actually the first of a pair of coins featuring Ramesses II. An ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, Ramesses reigned over the vast Egyptian Empire from 1279 B.C. to his death in 1213 B.C. Most historians consider Ramesses II as one of the most powerful and effective Pharaohs ever to rule the Empire.
Ramesses' great legacy of accomplishments over the 66 years of his reign is nothing short of astounding! Through both hard fought campaigns and wise diplomacy, he was able to restore and secure the Empire's failing borders. Ramesses also was firmly dedicated to building throughout the realm, establishing great memorials and monuments. This has provided archeologists and historians troves of information regarding the Period. Interestingly, he also moved the capitol from Thebes, to establish a new city in the eastern Delta region. He named it Pi-Ramesses Aa-nakntu, translated, "Domain of Ramesses, Great in Victory."
The Coin's design is based on actual ancient hieroglyphs, incuse engraved,* with added hand-brushed antique finish. With the additional touch of the edge's appearance having a chiseled-stone look, the resulting overall effect is like handling a stone carving.
The obverse features Ramesses, as often depicted in ancient hieroglyphs and statues. The realistic design is displayed both in the incuse style, as well as the finely antiqued finish. Even the prominent irregular cracks running through the design replicates how the hieroglyph's original condition would appear.
The reverse of each coin in the series displays a large, finely engraved image of the Republic of Chad's coat of arms. Encircling the image at the rim are the inscriptions, "Republic Du Tchad 2 Troy Oz 1000 Francs CFA .999 Fine Silver." Immediately below the coat of arms is the the release year.
*Incuse design is when an image, which might normally be engraved to be raised above the coin's surface, is rather struck to be recessed into the surface.
