The third 2018 America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver coin release features Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park. Named for the historic French-Canadian fur traders, who bravely navigated these interconnected waterways. Voyageur in French actually means "traveler," which these early traders and settlers definitely were. The waterways of Voyageurs were a vital part of the fur trade route into the Northwest territories. The history of Voyageurs preceding its establishment as a National Park in 1975 is fascinating. Looking back 250 years, we see the trade routes becoming more established. These navigable natural waterways clearly made way for a rich history to evolve throughout the region.
And then, there is the story of the Norwegian immigrant, Ingvald Walter Stevens. As recounted on the National Park's website, after living in the U.S. for 47 years, "Steve," as he came to be known, purchased a 400 acre island in 1932. The island was located in what is now Voyageurs. He lived on his island alone for almost 50 years, completely self-sufficient. In his own words, "I love Solitude, I love the wilderness, I love the wildlife. I do not like crowds. I do not like the city, where even the snow is dirty. I like my own company. I don't want to live if I can't take care of myself." Steve left his beloved island in 1979, at the age of 94, living another ten years.
With 218,000 acres (84,00 of which is water), the natural features of the Park are the greatest draw to visitors. The waterways weave through a patchwork of literally hundreds of islands. Beautiful recreational water resources are frequented by kayakers and fishermen of all ages. The Park encompasses four major lakes, including Namakan Lake, where Ingvald Walter Stevens made his home. The winter resources are also amazing, including skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoe hiking. If you happen to share any of "Steve's" sentiments regarding the value of getting away from the distractions of the city, you will surely love this place!
The reverse design of this 2018 ATB 5 oz Voyageurs National Park bullion coin features a pristine water scene. A finely detailed common loon is floating on the still waters of one of the area lakes. The bird's detail is meticulous, which highlights the overall scene very nicely. A very rough, weather and ancient glacier-scarred, rocky cliff rises very high out of the water in the near background. A scattering of trees have broken through the rocky shoreline. This gives way to a distant dense forest of Southern Boreal and Northern Hardwoods. The combined effect of the finely detailed waterfowl in the foreground against the rough, rocky cliffs in the background has produced a remarkable design. It is a fine commemoration of this stunning National Park.

Authorization for 5 oz 0.999 fine silver ATB coins was enacted in 2008. With the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 (Public Law 110-456), popular series was born. The designs of America the Beautiful 5 oz coins replicate those of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters. The bullion coins are three inches in diameter and have a nominal face value of 25 cents. These are the first five ounce, three inch, 0.999 fine silver bullion coins ever produced by the United States Mint. The fineness and weight are edge-incused on the coins.
These unique silver bullion coins feature reverse designs depicting national parks and other national sites in each state. Included are District of Columbia and U.S. territories, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands. The coins are being issued in the order each featured site was established as a national park or site.
