BOLD is very pleased to offer this third release in the remarkable South Korea 1 oz Silver Tiger series. Introduced in 2018 as the complement to the Gold Series, the Silver edition featured the matching design. That absolutely stunning design immediately captured the interest of the silver market, and it continues to increase with each new annual release. And that includes this brand new 2020 1 oz Silver South Korea Tiger BU medallion!
We were introduced to the series in 2018 with a view of an incredibly handsome tiger displaying its sleek, powerful, prowess while quietly moving through the jungle on the hunt. Following the series into 2019 with the 2nd release, we were astounded by the intense fierceness depicted in the moment before the lion ripped into its stalked prey.
Now, we arrive at somewhat of a change in pace, and we must say, the scene this design depicts is a delight! This time we are not up close experiencing the thrill of the hunt, or the ferocity of the capture. No, we are afforded a glimpse into the circle of life as experienced by this majestic creature in the wild.
The obverse features a large image a lion cub, rather artistically depicted leaning over the roof of the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace (located in northern Seoul, South Korea). The youthful cub is finely detailed in every respect, even to its facial expression, which we might describe as inquisitive.
Interestingly, the perspective of the large ornate main gate structure is dwarfed by the relative size of the cub. A mix flowers in fresh bloom add a nice touch to the overall scene. Namsan Seoul Tower stands tall at the right, located atop Namsan Mountain in central Seoul, which marks the highest point in Seoul. Inscriptions include "KOREAN TIGER 2020" stacked to the right of the cub, with a silhouette of a tiger footprint. Displayed in the tower is inscribed "SEOUL."
Common to the series, the reverse displays a remarkable design, using characters from the Korean alphabet to form the shape of the Korean Peninsula. The larger letters spell the country's official name. The overall stylistic effect is stunning! An attractive narrow band encircles the rim, which displays a pattern of the tiger's stripes. The inscriptions within the band include, "REPUBLIC OF KOREA" at the top rim, and "FINE SILVER 999" at the bottom. To the left of the peninsula design is the national emblem displayed on the Republic of Korea's flag. To the right is the unique anti-counterfeiting security feature of a latent image engraving, which very faintly displays, "999" in a small circle.
The Korean Tiger series was launched in 2016, offered only in 9999 fine gold. The series received immediate worldwide acclaim for the distinctive design and stunning production quality. The gold series' popularity has continued to increase through the following three releases. Following the extremely successful 2018 and 2019 releases of the 999 fine silver companion series, we are excited to see this remarkable third release. This has certainly developed into a proven series with all the magnificence and production quality as displayed on the original gold.
