2005-S Silver Proof State Quarter - MINNESOTA

The 2005-S Silver Proof Minnesota State Quarter is a real United States Mint coin that was produced for collector Silver Proof Sets at the San Francisco Mint. It is the 32nd coin added to the famous 50 State Quarters program and is one of only five state quarters to be released in 2005, along with California, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia.

The composition of the coin, 90% silver, the same alloy as the United States quarters before 1965, and the use of the coin's precise proof minting technique (hand polishing of the coin blanks and multiple strikes under high pressure to create the coin's mirror-like fields and high-contrast design elements) distinguish it from the hundreds of millions of clad quarters that circulated commercially. It is a low-mintage coin and is especially collectible, with a mintage of just 1,678,649. Littleton Coin

All coins sold by BOLD Precious Metals come from the U.S. Mint sealed Silver Proof Sets. Throughout the process, extreme care was taken to ensure that the proof surfaces were maintained in the condition in which they left the San Francisco Mint (coins were handled with cotton gloves and put into protective plastic coin holders).

The Minnesota Design: Land of 10,000 Lakes

The Reverse Profile:

The reverse design, which debuted on April 4, 2005, highlights two individuals fishing on a lake, a loon, and the outline of the state with its nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes," in the state design element. The composition is skillfully rendered in depth, from the Common Loon, Minnesota's state bird, swimming in the foreground, to a fishing boat in the middle distance, to a stand of pine in the distant far shore—the quiet character of Minnesota's outdoors. The landscape is framed by a raised, textured contour of the geographic outline of the state, and the words "Land of 10,000 Lakes" traverse the outline. US Mint

Close-ups show clear details of the loon's unique patterned plumage and of the texture of the evergreen trees. On proof strikes, these minute details are accentuated, with the mirrored background of the coins contrasting with the frosted devices, known by collectors and graders as the cameo or deep cameo (DCAM) effect, respectively, and creating a silver coin image unlike any found in circulation. CoinKnow

Charles L. Vickers, a sculptor-engraver at the United States Mint, was the designer of the reverse. He designed several state quarter releases.

The reverse inscriptions are all the same: MINNESOTA · 1858 · LAND OF 10,000 LAKES · 2005 · E PLURIBUS UNUM.

The Design Selection Process

There were a number of designs proposed for the Minnesota quarter. The ideas were a plow, a snowflake, a loon, designs with the lakes and loons in various shapes and the Mississippi River headwaters. At least one idea for the snowflake was shot down by the Mint. The current design is what Governor Pawlenty had recommended, and the idea was communicated publicly the night before the opening of fishing and hunting season May 14. Coin Appraiser

The Obverse Profile:

The obverse features the modified Washington portrait that was designed by John Flanagan in 1932 and revised for the State Quarters Program. The rim has inscriptions around it: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top and QUARTER DOLLAR at the bottom. On his left is LIBERTY, and on his right, IN GOD WE TRUST. The “S” mint mark that shows that the coin was made in San Francisco is on the right of the portrait.

Why is this a silver proof coin?

The Proof Minting Process

Proof coins are not made the same as circulating quarters. All these coins are made from a hand-polished coin blank, and the coin blank is fed into the press individually and struck at least twice. During repeated strikes under greater-than-normal pressures, the metal is forced into every part of the die, which creates surfaces and relief that are not possible in regular business-strike coins. The outcome is a mirror-like background field and frosted, matte-finish raised devices that provide the sharp visual contrast collectors, love.

90% Silver Composition

The standard circulation quarters since 1965 are made of copper-nickel clad and do not have any silver. The 2005-S Silver Proof Minnesota Quarter's composition is the "old" 1965 design, which was 90% silver with a 10% copper content. The weight, density, and ring of this composition gives the coin a noticeable difference when compared to clad quarters and include a good amount of silver: each coin has a content of 0.1808 troy ounces of silver, or about 5.623 grams.

San Francisco Mint Exclusivity

The Silver Proof Sets also had a silver proof denomination and were only sold by the San Francisco mint, with the "S" mint mark. They have never been put into general circulation. The 2005 quarter includes six different market segments: business strikes from approximately 2.9 billion Philadelphia and Denver-minted coins, low-mintage Satin Finish business strikes from mint sets (1.16 million per mint), clad proofs from San Francisco (3.26 million), and 90% silver proofs (1.68 million). These silver proof issues are a very small percentage of the total amount of Minnesota quarters minted and are only intended for collectors and not for circulation.

The 50 State Quarters Program

The 50 State Quarters Program was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Clinton in 1999, and it was active for nine years until 2008. The program celebrated every one of the 50 states in the sequence that they ratified the Constitution or were admitted to the Union, with 5 designs issued per year. Admitted to the Union May 11, 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state and received the 32nd quarter release.

The program quickly evolved into the most successful numismatic program in American history. It introduced millions more folks to the field of coin collecting, initially because of the coins from their home state and subsequently because of the completion of the 50-state coin set. In fact, the silver proof issues, which were made only at San Francisco and sold only as part of a collector set, became the best avenue for buying the series in investment-grade condition, and complete silver proof sets and individual, high-grade silver proofs have consistently been the most popular.

BOLD's Sourcing and Handling Process

All 2005-S Silver Proof Minnesota Quarters were directly removed from sealed U.S. Mint Silver Proof Sets from BOLD Precious Metals. This sourcing assures that coins have not been used to circulate and have remained in the protected condition that the Mint envisioned.

Cotton gloves were used at all stages of the extraction process so as not to contaminate the proof surfaces with oil and other body fluids. Coins were put into protective plastic containers directly after they were extracted. All of these coins in this inventory are untreated, unpolished, and uncleaned.

Please note: These coins have been examined to check the year and quantity only. They were not individually culled for cameo designating, deep cameo (DCAM) contrast, toning, or mint errors. It is normal for silver coins of this age to be mixed, with most being gem proof and some possibly being toned, lightly discolored, and/or tarnished coins, as these were stored together. Toning can occur over time as silver interacts with sulfur in the air, and it is perfectly natural and does not diminish the silver content or weight.

Coins are individually sealed in a plastic flip. Coins are sent by the roll (40 coins per roll for a total of 7.2336 troy oz of silver per roll).

Collecting and Investment Context

Silver Content Value

The coins are 90% silver, with 0.1808 troy oz of silver in each coin. With the current spot price of silver, it would be easy for buyers to determine the melt value of any individual coin or roll. A roll of 40 coins has 7.2336 troy oz of silver, so it's a convenient method to collect all of the junk silver while enjoying an added collector premium of proof silver and state-specific design.

Numismatic Value

The USA Coin Book estimates the 2005-S Minnesota Silver Proof quarter at $24 or more, based on the high melt value of the quarter, its representation of the Minnesota state quarter, and proof quality. Premiums are higher for Certified examples in higher grades—PR-69 DCAM and PR-70 DCAM. When deciding on professional coin grading services, two main grading services are widely accepted in the U.S. market: PCGS and NGC.

Error Varieties

The error coin collector is impressed by the 2005 Minnesota quarter. The 2005 Minnesota quarters have some additional trees as a result of die-polishing errors. There are errors in the dies which cause trees in the background to be duplicated in multiple forms: a small additional tree can be seen next to or below the fifth tree on the left; a trunk can be seen from a different angle through the sixth tree on the left. These error varieties are found on circulation issues (P and D mint mark), not on the silver proof issues, but are often desired collectibles for the 2005 series. Some of the most popular error varieties of this state quarter release are the 2005-P Minnesota Doubled Die Quarter, which can command up to $300.

The 50-State Set is complete.

Collectors who are putting together a 50 state silver proof set should own one silver proof quarter for each state. The Minnesota quarter is one of 50 required quarters for the 2005 series of five releases. Who Should Buy This Coin

The rewards of coin collecting and numismatics are greater than they appear.

The Minnesota Quarter 2005-S Silver Proof is the highest-quality version of the state quarter made and minted just for collectors; the 2005 state quarter is produced in clad and has mintages running in the hundreds of millions. This is a must-have for collectors looking to complete their silver proof state quarter project, their Minnesota silver proof collection, or their silver proof year set of 2005 coins.

Junk Silver Buyers

These coins are made from 90 % silver and are suitable for purchasers who are going to accumulate silver coins by weight, prior to the 1965 formula. The 40 silver proof quarters cost the equivalent weight of silver in a generic quarter or silver bar and will give over 7 troy ounces of silver in a familiar format, a U.S. government-issued quarter.

Gift Buyers and Minnesota Enthusiasts!

Whether you're a Minnesota native, an avid fisherman, a new coin collector, or searching for a meaningful present connected to American history and the scenic beauty of the Upper Midwest, a proof-quality quarter with Minnesota's famous “Land of 10,000 Lakes” motif is an ideal choice.
