2017 Silver Great Britain Queen's Beasts (The Griffin) - 2 oz

2017 2 oz Silver Queen's Beasts - Griffin

In this highly praised new series, the Royal Mint has once again proven its impeccable dedication to producing British coinage that faithfully represents the nation's rich heritage. With this second release in the Queen's Beasts series, the 2017 2 oz Silver Queen's Beasts - Griffin most certainly demonstrates the finest of craftsmanship.

Second in the immensely popular ten-coin Queen's Beasts series, The Griffin of Edward III was designed for the British Royal Mint by the highly respected engraver, Jody Clark. As with the inaugural release, the intricate detail captured on the image is truly awesome! This magnificent 2017 2 oz Silver Queen's Beasts - Griffin contributes greatly to the centuries of British heritage represented in the 10 original painted-plaster statues of 1953.

Minted in high-relief with highest purity and 2 oz weight, this silver bullion coin series has become a highly treasured favorite among collectors and precious metals investors world-wide. The coin's obverse displays Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the 5 pounds face value. Quite interestingly, the Queen's portrait was also designed by Jody Clark and adopted into British coinage since 2016.

The reverse features a highly detailed, majestic griffin, clutching a shield with its claws. The griffin spreads its wings towards the heights of the sky, with its long tail wrapped trailing behind. Encircling the rim are the inscriptions, "Griffin of Edward III," the coin's weight, purity and year.

History

The griffin of Edward III Queen's Beasts is an ancient mythical beast. It was considered a beneficent creature, signifying courage and strength combined with guardianship, vigilance, swiftness and keen vision. It was closely associated with Edward III, who engraved it on his private seal. The shield shows the Round Tower of Windsor Castle (where Edward III was born) with the Royal Standard flying from the turret, enclosed by two branches of oak surmounted by the royal crown.

Edward III is seen as the most significant monarch of the English Middle Ages and has, as such, played a major role in British history. During his lifetime, he was also known as Edward of Windsor. The Griffin was already associated with Edward III by his contemporaries and was even a part of his personal seal. Originally, the Griffin held a shield depicting Windsor Castle. This is a further direct link with Elizabeth II, whose family have borne the name of Windsor since 1917, after the family's residence to the west of London.

The Queen's Beasts are ten heraldic statues depicting the genealogy of Queen Elizabeth II. The statues were created by the British sculptor James Woodford in 1953 for the Queen's coronation, and temporarily set up in front of the western annex to Westminster Abbey - the coronation church of the British monarchy. Today, the almost 2 meter high painted plaster figures are on display in the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa.
