This 2018 Silver Niue 1 oz Double Dragon design remains true to Chinese legend and folklore as the two opposing dragons vie for the flaming pearl. The precious orb is prized and coveted above all treasures, consuming each dragon's life energy. Whirling through the air they seek to obtain that which is always just outside their grasp. This chase is most often portrayed among the clouds. The timeless scene has enthralled both old and young. Always fresh and inspiring, unnumbered heraldic stories arising out of the flaming orb and the dragons' chase continue to excite the imagination.
The reverse design features the two opposing dragons. Although facing one another, each has but a single object in sight. The flaming pearl is all that matters! The pearl is often associated with spiritual energy, wisdom, prosperity, power, and immortality. One dragon is circling downward in its attempt to grasp the pearl. The other is circling upward in the same whirling chase. Though there was a beginning to this chase, after the passing of unnumbered millennia, that day lies forgotten.
You can discern slight distinctions between the two dragons, noticeable both in their bodies, and expressions. The fineness of the engraved detail of the scales on their serpentine bodies brings depth to the scene. You can envision the writhing movement of their bodies as each seeks to grasp the pearl with their claws. Both dragons have their jaws opened wide, their quick tongues strain to touch the pearl, but are never quite close enough. The precious orb is forever aflame, and just out of reach.
The background is amazing, textured beautifully with a pattern of small scales, making the dragons' bodies appear to suspend in space and time. Encircling the rim is a reversed-scalloped border, providing a distinctive finish to the overall scene. Inscriptions include "ONE OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER" and the Chinese character for dragon.
The obverse displays the Ian Rank-Broadly portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Matching the reverse design, the background is textured with a pattern of small scales. The rim is also encircled by a reversed-scalloped border. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II, NIUE, TWO DOLLARS, 2018."
