2014-S Silver Proof America the Beautiful Quarter - GREAT SAND DUNES

As part of the renowned America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a 56-coin series honoring national parks and historic sites across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories, the San Francisco Mint struck the 2014-S 90% Silver Proof Great Sand Dunes Quarter.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado, which is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America at 750 feet, is represented by this 24th entry in the series.

Each coin has full U.S. legal tender status and contains 0.1808 troy oz of 90% silver. This coin offers an accessible way to acquire 90% silver with the added appeal of a U.S. Mint proof finish. It is available singly in a plastic flip or in rolls of 40, totaling 7.2336 troy ounces of silver per roll.

Design

The Obverse Profile

John Flanagan's 1932 image of George Washington, enhanced to emphasize details from his original design, is featured on the standard America the Beautiful obverse. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "QUARTER DOLLAR." At the neck are the engraver initials WC (William Cousins) and designer initials JF (John Flanagan).

The Reverse Profile

The reverse, created by Don Everhart (initials DE), shows a parent and son playing in the sand next to a creek bed, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains defining the horizon and the park's famous towering dunes rising behind them. The scene, where guests wade in Medano Creek while encircled by the largest dune field on the continent, captures a scene commonly associated with visitor recreation within the park.

The inscriptions read "GREAT SAND DUNES," "COLORADO," "2014," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The design was officially released on August 25, 2014.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

The tallest sand dunes in North America, which can reach heights of 750 feet (230 meters), are found in Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is situated on the eastern end of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado.

The dune field, a geological phenomenon created over thousands of years by winds carrying sand from the San Luis Valley bottom against the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, is estimated to contain more than 1.2 cubic miles of sand and spans around 30 square miles.

Explorer Zebulon Pike first documented the dunes in written records maintained by U.S. explorers in his journals from 1807, when traveling through the Louisiana Purchase.

President Herbert Hoover named it the Great Sand Dunes National Monument on March 17, 1932, and on September 13, 2004, it was granted full National Park and Preserve status, demonstrating its biological significance as one of Colorado's most distinctive and varied landscapes.

About the America the Beautiful Quarters Program

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which was approved by Congress and started by the US Mint in 2010, honored 56 locations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five US territories by issuing five new quarter designs annually through 2021. Then-Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner chose the locations after consulting with the Secretary of the Interior and state governors. The locations were listed chronologically.

Silver proof versions from the San Francisco Mint are struck in 90% silver using specially prepared dies and multiple strikes to create the mirrored fields and crisp relief that characterize proof grade. These coins were taken from silver proof sets that were sealed and sold directly by the U.S. Mint.

Important Condition Note

Coins sold individually arrive in a plastic flip. Rolls of 40 arrive in a hard plastic tube.

All coins were extracted from original U.S. Mint proof sets using cotton gloves. These coins were inspected only for year and count; they were not culled for cameos, deep cameos, toning, or mint errors.

Buyers should expect a mix of gem proofs and some toned or discolored coins, particularly in older rolls. This is standard for bulk 90% silver proof purchasing.
