The Republic of Korea and KOMSCO take great pleasure in announcing the forth silver bullion medallion in the Chiwoo Cheonwang series. This 2019 Silver 1 oz Chiwoo Cheonwang Medallion Proof edition is an incredibly magnificent addition to the on-going bullion series. Chiwoo Cheonwang was introduced in 2016 as the first silver bullion produced by the South Korean State Mint. That inaugural release took the world by storm, as it was universally praised for its striking design and stunning production quality. Each edition since has continued to increase in popularity.
The obverse, though common to the series, is anything but common! Displayed in exquisite detail is "Do ggae bi," which should always be pronounced with an exclamation point! Do ggae bi (!) is a mythical figure from Korean lore that had the power to protect from evil spirits. The actual design displayed is from a roof tile dating from the Silla Dynasty. This kingdom ruled over south-eastern Korea during the very important Three Kingdoms period, extending from the 1st century BC to 7th century AD.
Setting itself apart from the BU edition, this stunning Proof is highlighted by brilliant rim-band, without the frosted background texture. Inscriptions within the band include "REPUBLIC OF KOREA" encircling the top rim, and "2019 FINE SILVER 999" at the left rim, with "1 CLAY" at the right, and THE KOMSCO logo at the bottom. Below the Do ggae bi image is a unique, latent image engraving, that very faintly displays, "999" in a small circle.
Interestingly, the "1 Clay" is a new measurement developed by KOMSCO. It references 1 unit of 1 troy oz of the metal. The word clay is considered to be of the soil, out of which the metal was derived.
The reverse is incredible in its finely detailed depiction of Chiwoo Cheonwang. Unlike the previous three editions that displayed this great mythical warrior in the fierce throes of battle, the attention now zooms in on the man himself. Standing alone, atop a barren mountain, Chiwoo Cheonwang's fixed gaze takes in the scene far below him. A thousand stories could be recounted simply from the expression on his face; the seeming endless string of battles, the terrible carnage that has marked his valiant path, yet here he stands. Although battle-hardened, this warrior has neither lost heart nor his great vision.
Chiwoo stands firmly as one who has been proven through fire. He is arrayed in intricately detailed battle armor protecting his shoulders, chest and thighs. The designs depicted on the armor also reference those of the period. He has removed his helmet, for today, it will not be needed. Prominently displayed is his massive sword, which Chiwoo grasps firmly before him, with its blade-point to the ground. His right hand rests upon his legendary shield that bears the fierce image of Do ggae bi! Behind him, his large cloak flows, captured in the breeze. Chiwoo Cheonwang is renowned as the God of War, and this amazing detailed design pauses the war for just this moment to unveil a glimpse of the man, who yet still displays this powerful presence, even when at rest.
Distinguishing this Proof edition, as with the obverse, is a brilliant rim-band, without the frosted background texture. The scene spills out into the rim-band at the bottom. Included in the top left of the band in the single inscription, "CHIWOO CHEONWANG.".
The Chiwoo medallion series was introduced in 2016 as the first silver bullion medallion offering of the Republic of Korea. That inaugural release was so highly successful, the resulting series was born. The 2017 and 2018 editions established the series for continued growth in the global precious metals community of investors and collectors. To date, the Chiwoo Cheonwang series has been universally received with much praise for the distinctive designs and fine production quality.
