The Scottsdale Omnia 1 oz Silver Round is a tribute to Spanish minted cob coins, which were widely circulated during the 16th ‑ 18th centuries. You may know them by their more popular name, doubloons, which are forever associated with pirates and Spanish conquerors. The original cob coins were somewhat crudely struck and trimmed by hand. The rough inconsistencies of these old cobs continue to fuel their enduring numismatic popularity to this day. However, we are very excited to see this striking new Scottsdale Omnia 1 oz Silver Round released in tribute to the old doubloons!
Cob coins, minted by Spanish conquerors in Mexico beginning in the 16th century, are considered the first coins minted in the Americas. According to World Numismatics, the name "cob," is believed to come from the Spanish cabo de barra, or "end of bar." This references the fact that these coins were cut from the end of gold or silver bars instead of the slower method of rolling out a bar into a specific thickness. If the cut coins were too heavy, the minter simply cut a piece off, thus the irregular shapes found on these coins. These cobs were also known as "pieces of eight," because the Spanish dollar coin was worth eight reales and could be cut into eight pieces to make change.
The obverse of this Scottsdale Omnia 1 oz Silver Round features in the center inset a large cob-era cross, finely engraved in rich detail. At the rim is wide, decorative double-band, and the inscriptions, "1 TROY OZ. SILVER 99.9% PURE" at the top. At the bottom rim is the Latin phrase "IN OMNIA PARATUS," which means "Prepared for all things."
Filling the reverse field is the distinctive Scottsdale crowned lion head, intricately detailed. The border features the same design as the obverse but with "SCOTTSDALE MINT" interrupting the quadrilateral border elements along the bottom rim.
