$44.30$43.45Perth Mint is pleased to announce the introduction of this brand new series the Australian Bird of Paradise. Featured for this inaugural 2018 release is a beautiful depiction of Victoria's Riflebird. The species is native to north-eastern Queensland. A relatively small-sized bird, it is best appreciated for its beautiful plumage.
Obverse: Bears the Ian Rank-Broadley likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The wide rim-band includes the inscriptions, "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2018 1 DOLLAR."
The reverse of this 2018 1 oz Silver Australia Bird of Paradise features the Victoria's Riflebird species. Although this bird was known by the indigenous as "duwuduwu," in 1848, Scottish naturalist, John Macgillivray recorded his sighting and named the bird after the current reigning monarch, Queen Victoria.
The male bird's coloring is velvet black, with a stunning plumage of iridescent greenish blue, purple, and bronze. When seeking to catch the eye of a female for mating, the male makes good use of these distinctive colors. The mating dance performed is particularly fascinating, which is reflected in this reverse design. In his dance, the bird extends his wings forward and lifts them up. He also lifts his head high, beckoning for his mate. Shown here perched upon a branch, the finely-detailed image is truly spectacular! Within the rim-band are the inscriptions, "AUSTRALIAN BIRD OF PARADISE . 1 oz 9999 SILVER." Just to the right at the base of the branch is displayed Perth Mint's "P" mintmark.
