The 2019 EC8 St. Vincent & The Grenadines Seaplane Silver Coin is the second coin of the year from the Scottsdale Mint for the country of St. Vincent & The Grenadines and the seventh of eight silver coins in the 2019 EC8 series. Each is minted in .999 fine silver, is graded “Brilliant Uncirculated,” and has a mintage of 25,000 coins, with each coin in its own plastic capsule.Face value: $2 Eastern Caribbean Dollars (XCD)—backed by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB).The back design is focused on a seaplane, not as a design element but as the vehicle that links the various islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Obverse
On the obverse is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf, which was used on coins throughout the Commonwealth between 1985 and 1998. It is a portrait of the Queen in profile to the right, with two special laurel-like evergreen branches leading up to the head. Around the rim there are inscriptions: "EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK" in an arc above "1 oz .999 SILVER · QUEEN ELIZABETH II · 2 DOLLARS" in an arc below, which state the silver's weight, purity, and face value in one go.
Reverse — The Seaplane
On the back, a seaplane flies low over a Caribbean beach, with rowboats and cargo on the beach below and palm trees lining the shore. The design's key elements are the flowing inscription of "St. Vincent & the Grenadines" at the top, the watery waves that seem to flow in a peaceful manner, and the inscription "2019" at the bottom, which is the year the competition took place. Superimposed on the calm waves at the waterline is the national motto of St. Vincent & the Grenadines: "Land of the Blessed," which helps to tie the design to the country's official identity.
The seaplane on the reverse is NOT a generic aviation picture. The mode of transport that is unique in the Grenadine chain.St. Vincent & the Grenadines comprises 32 islands and cays that cover an area of some 389 square kilometers on the Windward side of the Lesser Antilles. The outlying Grenadines islands, small enough and steep enough, have limited or no conventional aviation infrastructure, while the main island, St. Vincent, does have a conventional airport. For decades, the solution for residents and visitors to travel between islands has been seaplane and light aircraft charters. Seaplanes from Barbados provide the only way to access the small airstrip at the secluded resort island of Mustique. In Canouan, terrain will restrict the length of the runway. Bequia can be reached from Barbados and St. Vincent by seaplane. The plane above the beach—the reverse of this coin—is really the only way to arrive for much of the Grenadines.
The national motto of St. Vincent & The Grenadines is "Land of the Blessed," which is used on government documents and tourism propaganda. It captures the essence of the island's natural setting—volcanic peaks, rainforest interior, coral reefs, and some of the world's most protected sailing waters in the Caribbean.
The coin marks the complete independence of St. Vincent & The Grenadines from Britain in 1979, as a Commonwealth realm, with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (the Queen is their head of state). The EC8 program features the reverse side of the coin with each island country's most defining characteristic. The selection of a seaplane as opposed to a beach, with “Land of the Blessed” written in the waves, encapsulates both the pragmatic and the aspirational in one shot.
The EC8 Series was manufactured under the auspices of the ECCB (established in 1983), which has been pegging the Eastern Caribbean Dollar to the U.S dollar since 1976 at EC$2.70 = US$1.There are eight countries involved: Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Anguilla, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent & The Grenadines. All eight countries get a new design, silver, silver-colored, and gold versions every year. The St. Vincent Seaplane coin is the second release of Scottsdale Mint's St. Vincent series, with the inaugural EC8 SVG coin being released in 2018. Scottsdale Mint is ISO 9001 certified—the international standard for quality management systems, which indicates a consistent standard of manufacturing for all EC8 production runs.
