Who is Tonatiuh, and why is he on the Sun Stone?

Tonatiuh was the Aztec solar deity, the "Turquoise Lord" who governed the current age, the Fifth Sun. In Aztec cosmology, the sun required daily blood sacrifices to continue its journey across the sky; Tonatiuh is depicted at the center of the Sun Stone holding human hearts in his claw-like hands, representing this cosmic requirement. His presence at the center establishes the entire monument as a solar and cosmological statement. Note: some scholars debate whether the central figure is Tonatiuh or an alternative deity, the interpretation remains an active area of archaeological scholarship.

Who is Cuauhtémoc and why is he on the reverse?

Cuauhtémoc (born 1496, died 1525) was the last ruler of the Aztec Empire. His name means "Descending Eagle" in Nahuatl. He led the defense of Tenochtitlan against Spanish forces and was captured on August 13, 1521, after a 75-day siege. He was executed by Hernán Cortés in 1525 at age twenty-eight. Revered in Mexico as a national hero and symbol of indigenous resistance, he was chosen for the reverse as the most significant historical figure associated with the Aztec Sun Stone's cultural world, the last embodiment of the civilisation the stone represents.

What is the Aztec calendar system shown on the Sun Stone?

The Sun Stone depicts two interlocking Aztec calendars running simultaneously: the 365-day solar calendar (xiuhpohualli) used for agricultural and seasonal planning, and the 260-day ritual calendar (tonalpohualli) used for religious ceremonies and destiny readings. Combined, these two cycles produced a 52-year "Calendar Round", a period after which both calendars completed full cycles simultaneously. Every year and every day in the 52-year cycle held a unique name-and-number designation. The end of each 52-year cycle was a moment of cosmic anxiety in Aztec culture.
