The 2021 1 oz Tokelau Vivat Humanitas Silver Coin is the second issue of this year's Pressburg Mint Vivat Humanitas series, a celebratory series featuring art, design, and precious metal dedicated to the celebration of humanity's greatest achievements. The 2021 version of this coin celebrates Music, one of the most universal and enduring expressions of the human spirit, using .999 proof silver and is legal tender by the Government of Tokelau. It is one of the most supply-constrained proof-like silver coins that the Pressburg Mint has ever produced, with a mintage total of only 7,500 pieces, down from 10,000 pieces in the first year of the 2020 release. The series' central message is that, despite conflicts and differences, humanity continues to progress and achieve amazing things; "Vivat Humanitas," in Latin, means "Long Live Humanity."
The Obverse Profile: Contains the fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley (1998) in the inset of the coin, surrounded by piano keys, musical notes, and a sound wave—symbolizing the music theme of 2021. The Queen's crown is the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Inscription: ELIZABETH II · TOKELAU · 1 oz Ag 999.
The Reverse Profile: A bold treble clef (G clef) is the dominant clef in the center, with concentric vinyl record grooves radiating outward. The use of additional musical symbols throughout the composition includes an eighth note, common time, a chord, and a coda mark. Inscriptions: "VIVAT HUMANITAS · $5 · 2021."
Both sides are given a visual depth not possible in a standard BU coin by the proof-like finish, that is, the frosted design elements against the mirror-polish fields.
The Vivat Humanitas series, which follows its story from the Silver series of the Pressburg Mint, was started in 2020 as a legal tender bullion series that focuses on one of the pillars of human civilization in each new annual issue. Written communication and language were highlighted in the 2020 debut. The 2021 edition celebrates music, which Pressburg Mint, as one of the highest achievements of humankind, is able to transcend borders, languages, and ages.
The proof-like mintages are intentionally smaller than the BU counterpart of each year and are therefore more collectible and scarce. The 2021 proof-like run of 7,500 coins is even closer to the inaugural 10,000-proof-like set of 2020, putting even more pressure on collectors to complete their series of Vivat Humanitas.
Established in 2015 in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava (formerly Pressburg), the mint has a long tradition of minting coins in the region dating back to the 5th century BC when the Celtic people minted their own coins in the region. In 1430, the city of Bratislava was granted the privilege of minting coins, which it did for the Holy Roman Empire and then for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The three individuals who established the modern Pressburg Mint have built up a business, which is now an internationally recognized producer with three advanced production facilities—a family business. It is renowned for its design innovation, like the release of the world's first AI-designed silver coin in June 2023, and its precision craftsmanship that is characteristic of its proof-like finishes.
