The 2022 1 oz Cameroon Mandrill Gold Coin is one of the rarest wildlife coins in the contemporary sovereign bullion market, having been circulated in the world only 100 times. This gold mandrill, struck from .9999 fine gold by Scottsdale Mint in official partnership with the Republic of Cameroon, honors the largest monkey and one of the most strikingly beautiful mammals on earth, the mandrill of the rainforests of Central Africa, including Cameroon.
The obverse features Cameroon's national Coat of Arms, and the reverse features the coloring of the mandrill in remarkable relief detail. This coin is minted at 100, putting it in the company of the rarest sovereign gold issues produced anywhere in the world.
It is delivered in a Certificate of Authenticity box and is immediately ready for vaulting, displaying, or collection.
The Reverse Profile — The Mandrill
On the back, there's a gold proof image of the mandrill in full relief—the unmistakable facial coloring of the animal captured in the exquisite detail that Scottsdale Mint is known for. The mandrill's intense coloration, its thick mane, and its imposing stature are captured in a composition that conveys the animal's imposing physical presence and its clear visual identity.
Alongside the year is written: ".9999 · 1 OUNCE FINE GOLD."
The Obverse Profile — The front of the coin.
On the obverse, the official Coat of Arms of the Republic of Cameroon is displayed (adopted December 31, 1960). The tri-colored shield is green, red, and yellow, like the national flag, and features a map of Cameroon in the center, with the scales of justice superimposed (this was added in 1984).
The two crossed fasces behind the shield are the old symbol of the authority and unity of ancient Romans—a symbol of Cameroon's desire to govern itself in a disciplined way. The gold star in the center represents the unification of the former French and British colonies into one nation-state.
'Peace-Work-Fatherland' in bilingual French (and English) is the national motto, which rounds off the design. They are inscribed "REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN" and have a face value.
The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is the largest monkey in the world and is also the most colorful mammal on Earth. Adult males weigh between 19 and 30 kg (42–66 lb), with a head-body length of 70–95 cm.
Their extraordinary coloring is not pigmentation but structural—this is because the blue ridges are caused by parallel arrangements of collagen fibers below the skin that scatter light, and the red is from blood vessels that lie near the skin's surface.
The native habitat of the mandrill is west-central Africa, in the southern parts of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo. To the north, it is exactly delimited by the Sanaga River, and to the east it is limited by the Ogooué River and the Ivindo River.
Mandrills are found in large social groups (hordes) in tropical rainforests, with up to hundreds of individuals. Diurnal—active during the day—mandrills communicate using a complex system of facial expressions and sounds.
But in spite of their extreme rarity, mandrills are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, due to habitat loss and bushmeat hunting (for food) in their Central African distribution. The life of the mandrill is not always secure, which is why the coin series is dedicated to it.
Since 2020, the Scottsdale Mint has been issuing the Cameroon Mandrill series of coins, 100 per year. This is the 3rd year in a row of the 2022 edition.
The same 100-coin mintage limit for each of the three years makes this a consistent collecting series, where the scarcity at each issue is very high:
The series is Club—Cameroon Gold Ounce Bullion.
Scottsdale Mint is an ISO 9001-certified mint located in Scottsdale, Arizona, that makes sovereign legal tender gold and silver coins for governments in 30+ countries.
Together with the Republic of Cameroon, they've issued some of the lowest-mintage sovereign gold coins on the modern bullion market, with the Mandrill series being just 100 coins per year, so each year's issue is truly rare by any measure.
