Silver 1 oz Buffalo Round (Sunshine Mint)

The 1 oz Sunshine Mint Buffalo Silver Round is the most reproduced design in the American Private Silver Round market and features a security anti-counterfeiting technology no other Buffalo round has—Sunshine Minting's proprietary MintMark SI™—a micro-engraved, encrypted design that is readily apparent when a decoder lens is placed over the coin. This is the best choice for the investor looking to get a Buffalo round at the best available premium with some degree of anti-counterfeiting protection but not a significant premium.

The designer of the Buffalo Nickel is James Earle Fraser, the Native American composite head on the obverse and the American bison (based on the animal Black Diamond) on the reverse, which originally was the design of the five-cent coin from 1913 through 1938 and has since evolved into the classic American silver round design. Sunshine Minting does it their own way: crisp, high contrast, strong relief that will stand out in hand and under any light.

Sunshine Minting is the source of the majority of 1 oz silver blanks sold for the United States Mint to make their popular American Silver Eagle coins. The institutional connection, one in which Sunshine Minting provides the blanks that are used for the world's most liquid silver government coin, gives you the answer to all your questions about the quality standards Sunshine Minting uses. Each blank they make is on the same equipment, at the same tolerances, as the blanks sent to the U.S. Mint.

All Sunshine Minting products come from BOLD Precious Metals. Each round is packed in new condition in a protective plastic flip.

Design: Fraser's Buffalo Nickel

Obverse: The Three-Chief Composite Portrait

The obverse features Sunshine Minting's interpretation of Fraser's iconic Native American portrait, a right profile with braided hair, strong features, and the characteristic details of braided hair and bone necklaces, which have been part of this design for more than 100 years. The obverse is said to be the result of combining the faces of three actual native leaders of the early 20th century. The three were Chief Iron Tail (Lakota Sioux), Chief Two Moons (Cheyenne), and Chief John Big Tree (Seneca/Kiowa). Fraser intended to produce a portrait of Native American dignity, not of any one person.

The word LIBERTY is along the right side in period-style lettering. The SMI mint mark is below the portrait, which is Sunshine Minting's hallmark in the form of an oval. The origin of the round is confirmed by the SMI mint mark, the hallmark in the form of an oval

Reverse: Black Diamond in Profile

The North American continent's largest land mammal is the American bison. On the back, there is the profile of the bison on the left, with the inscription of the weight, purity, and metal content along the top. The bison was modeled after Black Diamond, a bison that lived in the Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century, who would not stand face-on for Fraser and would only allow him to capture the side view, which became the most prominent feature of the coin.

The inscriptions above the bison attest to weight and purity: 1 TROY OZ · 999 FINE SILVER. The circular MintMark SI™ security element (see below for full security feature description), which is part of the design in the center above the bison's back, is an anti-counterfeiting feature built into Sunshine Minting's design.

This is the MintMark SI™ Security Feature, a new feature that has been introduced to the coins. This is the new feature, MintMark SI™, a security feature that has been added to the coins.

The one factor that sets this round apart from all other Buffalo silver rounds available in the market is the MintMark SI™ feature, which needs to be explained first.

What MintMark SI™ Is

MintMark SI™ operates on a nanoscale level, with optical variation and precision laser micro-engraving that makes it difficult to replicate or forge with standard minting or forgery methods. The technology was developed based on adaptations of security printing technology and made its debut in 1-ounce and 10-ounce silver and gold products in April 2013, eventually to be rolled out across SMI's production.

Sunshine Minting's branded silver and gold bullion come with its innovative MintMark SI security features. MintMark SI technology also features a scrambled indicia on the reverse side of all silver and gold bullion bars and some silver rounds. The micro-engraving can only be seen when the decoding lens from Sunshine Minting is placed on the security pad located on the product.

How to Use It

MintMark SI employs a special form of encoding, known as a scrambled indicia, which can only be read with a decoder lens. If you inspect your round without any special instruments, the MintMark SI area will appear as a circular area on your round. When the decoder lens is positioned vertically over the security feature, the word VALID is displayed on the LCD screen of MintMark SI™. With the lens held horizontally above the security mark, a "Sunshine" pattern is visible.

The decoder lens is not necessary for the enjoyment or storage of the round but is sold separately for an authentication purpose. The Sunshine Mint decoder lens is perfect for most dealers and coin shops to confirm any mint mark SI product in seconds.

What does it mean to investors?

There is no counterfeiting exposure with private mint silver rounds like there is with sovereign coins. Coins issued by the government are counterfeited-permissible and come from high-security government equipment that is hard to duplicate—especially with industrial quality control. Historically, private rounds have been a major source of counterfeit rounds and do not have the legal protection available for public rounds. The Buffalo round buyer is provided with an authentic, third-party verified authentication system with MintMark SI™ that simply cannot be achieved by generic Buffalo rounds minted by any other mint without proprietary security technology.

About Sunshine Minting

Sunshine Minting, Inc. (SMI) is in a unique position in the American precious metals industry—it is one of the most respected private mints in the United States as well as one of the most important infrastructure suppliers of the silver coin program for the United States government. Founded in 1979, Sunshine Minting began as a small operation, TENTEX in Chino, California, a combination of the birthplaces of its founders, Texas and Tennessee. TENTEX produced 1 oz silver rounds and silver bullion bars from 1979 to 1984 that were refined and minted. In 1984, a mining company out of Kellogg, Idaho called Sunshine Mining bought TENTEX and moved operations to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Johnson Matthey's decision to leave the business of fabricating silver and gold blanks was a strategic one in 1996. They were unable to go out of contract with the United States Government until they could secure a suitable minting company to do the same with the same skill. Johnson Matthey approached Sunshine Minting with the idea of replacing their contract, and in Spring 1997, Sunshine Minting took over their contract with the U.S. Mint that continues to this day.

Sunshine Minting has the art and design development, tool and die making, assay lab and quality control, melting, continuous casting, alloying of precious metals, rolling, annealing, blank work, gold plating, edge lettering, and serial numbering facilities. Sunshine Minting also provides silver blanks to the Royal Canadian Mint, strengthening its position as the most institutionally linked private North American silver mint.

Now, Sunshine Minting is based in Henderson, Nevada (moved from Coeur d'Alene in 2025) and has manufacturing capacity in addition, with a Shanghai joint venture catering to markets in Asia. Sunshine Minting now supplies the minting industry with the world's largest quantity of silver.

IRA Eligibility

This 1 oz Sunshine Mint Buffalo Silver Round is .999 fine silver, which is the minimum purity requirement for inclusion in a Self-Directed Precious Metals IRA. Beyond a minimum purity requirement, many IRA custodians have a lower standard for quality when using private mints than they do for a U.S. mint or Royal Canadian Mint, and Sunshine Minting has that standard. Please check IRA product acceptance with the IRA custodian before purchase.
