The obverse of the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar displays the left profile effigy of Lady Liberty modeled by Anna Willess Williams and designed by George T. Morgan. Lady Liberty wears a Phrygian cap with the inscriptions of “LIBERTY” on its hair band. The iconic motto of the United States of America is engraved on the top as “E PLURIBUS UNUM'' that translates to “out of many, one'' and “1881” below the portrait. These inscriptions are surrounded by 13 stars that represent the 13 colonies of the United States.
The reverse side displays the coat of arms of the United States of America during the period 1878-1904. This coat of arms depicts an American bald eagle flaunting its majestic wingspan. The eagle holds an olive branch in one of its talons and a quiver of arrows in the other, symbolizing peace and war. The eagle is surrounded by two wreaths on either side, emphasizing peace that is also depicted by the facing of the eagle towards the side of the olive branch. Identifying marks, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “IN GOD OF TRUST” and “ONE DOLLAR” are engraved to represent the country of issue, the motto of the US, and face value.
