10 oz Eagle Silver Bar (SilverTowne)

The Design

On the obverse of this bar is depicted a bald eagle in flight, with wings open and talons outstretched, presumably in a grasping motion toward a branch below. This bar is based on the SilverTowne Mint's well-known eagle, which also graces the 1 oz and 5 oz versions of this bar. The wings and tail are finely detailed with feathers that stand out from the mirrored surface, which is proof of quality. The wings and tail are beautifully engraved with the detail of the feathers set against a proof-like mirrored background, which is a contrast to the plain surface of generic bars.

Below the eagle's face are the weight and purity (".999 FINE SILVER TEN TROY OUNCES").

The back is embellished with the well-known Prospector and Donkey logo of SilverTowne, with the logos placed in a diagonal criss-cross waffle pattern. The waffle design has another practical purpose: It helps decrease surface contact between the bars when stacked, which helps preserve the finish.

About SilverTowne Mint

SilverTowne began as a small coin shop in Winchester, Indiana, in 1949 and was founded by Leon Hendrickson, not a mint. Toward the early part of the 1970s, he and his wife, Ruhama, recognized an opportunity that no one else had seen—there was an increasing demand for privately minted bullion products, and not many American companies were filling it.

In 1973, the SilverTowne Mint began on Bliss Press and Nickel Presses. The growth rate was too rapid for the original facility to keep up, and after 10 years, orders could not be fulfilled. The mint moved to a larger facility in Winchester in 1985 and continues to be in operation there. SilverTowne also produces hundreds of thousands of ounces of fine silver bullion per month and also provides custom minting services to businesses, sports organizations, and government agencies.

A-Mark Precious Metals purchased a controlling interest in the mint, and the retail portion remained a Hendrickson family business in 2016. The mint's exclusive system of silver feedstock with Asahi Holdings guarantees the quality of the silver in each bar.

One of the most widely known symbols in American bullion is the Prospector and Donkey logo on the back of this bar. It is easy to recognize by any silver dealer.

Why a 10 oz Bar?

Most silver investors have found the 10 oz silver bar to be the ideal size. The math is simple: 10 oz bars have a significantly lower premium per ounce because there is more silver in the bars and it is a lower cost to mint them. 10 oz bars are priced at $18 to $30 premium per bar, which is about $1.80 to $3.00 per ounce, while 1 oz government minted coins are valued at $5 to $10 + per ounce.

Purchase ten 1 ounce coins, and you actually end up paying 10 individual fabrication premiums. Purchase one 10 oz. bar for a buck.

This is also more efficient for storage. It's a bar about the size of a thick smartphone, measuring 91mm x 47mm x 8.5mm. There are twenty of them on a sheet. Five score ships in a box. Managing tubes of individual coins or rounds is much more difficult than large bars.

The compromise—flexibility. When you go to try to sell it, it's all or nothing with a 10 oz bar. There are 10 1 oz coins for sale in pieces. The majority of veteran stackers carry both bars for cost and smaller coins or rounds for flexibility in liquidating.

Which is better, a 10 oz Bar or 1 oz Rounds?

Purchase the 10 oz bar if: you're a “core” silver buyer and want the best ounces per dollar, you're not averse to selling in 10 oz increments, and you're not seeking out a government minted coin for IRA eligibility.

Purchase 1 oz rounds when you wish to sell them over time, you are not very knowledgeable about silver and are starting to work up confidence, or you want to diversify your collection with different designs.

Silver bars from private mints like SilverTowne will be IRA-eligible at .999 purity. Additionally, government minted coins such as the American Silver Eagle are also IRA eligible and might be easier to work with certain custodians, but have much higher premiums. When considering building a silver IRA, and there is a concern about costs, private-mint bars can also be considered and are a common choice.
