The obverse of the $5 Liberty Half Gold Eagle Coin features the timeless effigy of Lady Liberty by Christain Gobrecht. The effigy displays the Lady wearing the classic Liberty cap, also termed the Coronet Crown, with the crown engraved with “LIBERTY.” This effigy is surrounded by 13 stars representing the 13 colonies of the United States of America. The year is inscribed below the effigy, and availability varies.
The coin's reverse bears the heraldic eagle in the center, welding a shield on its chest. The eagle clenches on a quiver of arrows and an olive branch, depicting the contrast of peace and war. The eagle is surrounded by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the face value, “FIVE D.” The motto of the US, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” may or may not be present on the reverse, depending on the year of the issue.
The $5 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin is the first gold coin to be struck in the United States. It was struck in all of the US Mint's current and previous facilities, namely Philadelphia, West Point, Denver, Carson City, San Francisco, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans.
