It was designed by Dr. Charles B. Stewart who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at the Convention of 1836. It was accepted as the official state flag of the Republic of Texas on January 25, 1839 at the Third Congress.
The three elements of the flag have documented significance: Blue vertical bar signifies loyalty; white signifies purity; red signifies bravery. The single white star, on which Texas got its nickname, indicates the state of Texas as a single entity (and as an independent republic).
