The design of Maryland's flag is a combination of the family coats of arms of the Calvert and Crossland families, the founding ones of the Maryland colony, and dates back to the 17th century, over 100 years before the United States of America gained independence.

The Maryland flag's design is a direct descendant of George Calvert (c. 1580-1632), the first Lord Baltimore, who was given a royal charter to create a colony in North America. Calvert's coat of arms was a blend of two family lines: the gold-and-black Calvert from his father's and the red-and-white Crossland from his mother's.
During the majority of Maryland's historic years, the Calvert gold-and-black colors were the only symbol of the colony. Maryland's Confederate troops used the Crossland red-and-white as their symbol on the Civil War. First seen in 1876 (eleven years after the war) the combined four-quadrant flag was interpreted as a symbol of post-war reunification and both heraldic traditions came together as a gesture of healing between Maryland citizens who had fought on opposing sides.
This became the official design of the state flag by the Maryland General Assembly in 1904. It was the first state flag designed entirely from English heraldry, and the flag design has not changed since formal adoption, making it one of the oldest continuous flag designs in America.
