The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is regarded as the most beautiful coin issued by the United States Mint. The series was designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at President Theodore Roosevelt's request and issued from 1907 until 1933, when the entire gold coinage of the United States was recalled. The .900 fine gold is being struck in the largest gold denominations in American coinage history, each holding 0.9675 troy oz of .900 gold.
These Double Eagles are BOLD's MS62 certified by PCGS or NGC and are in Mint State, with light contact marks commensurate with original mint handling and no wear on high points. The coins are selected at random from the entire period (1907-1933). Please notify us before ordering if there is a particular date you are interested in for your collection.
Only certified products that we would buy back are sold at BOLD. At its heart, the MS62 Double Eagle is a combination of bullion and numismatics, the former in liquid form and the latter in historical form. When comparing the buy-back prices for our MS62 examples with the well-established secondary market for MS62 certified and MS62 graded examples of Double Eagle certified PCGS and NGC examples, our buy-back prices are competitive.
On the obverse is depicted Lady Liberty, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the U.S. Capitol dome in the background behind her, surrounded by a field of stars. Saint-Gaudens used classical Greek high relief sculpture to impart movement and depth to the design, something unheard of in U.S. coinage at the time. The earliest (high relief) coin of the series is considered the finest; the standard flat relief production coins, beginning in 1908, have the same composition and are minted in larger numbers and are the most frequently seen coins in the MS62 slab grade.
On the back is a large American bald eagle flying over a rising sun with "TWENTY DOLLARS" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" written. The word “IN GOD WE TRUST” has been part of the obverse lettering since 1908. The edge has lettering: E PLURIBUS UNUM with stars.
At BOLD Precious Metals, we only have in our inventory those coins that we would want to buy back, and MS62 is a grade that we understand is important for that reason. PCGS MS62 falls in the lower range of uncirculated coins: There's no wear on the high points, but there may be contact marks and bag marks from original mint handling. It's not a negative to cover up—it's what makes MS62 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles more accessible to get into certified U.S. gold coinage and trade closer to bullion values than MS65+ examples. The market for PCGS-certified Double Eagles is deep and liquid, so we sell PCGS-certified Double Eagles competitively for the buy-back service.
A Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in MS62 will command a slight premium over its gold content, which is 0.9675 troy ounce, but will not be as high as a higher-grade certified Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. We believe that this is an easy way to put it: You're paying for the PCGS slab, you're paying for the coin's numismatic history, and you're paying for the liquidity that comes with a piece you know and can be verified independently.
If you're looking for maximum gold for the lowest cost per ounce, our 1 oz gold bars might be better suited for you. The MS62 Double Eagle is a real premium when you want to find U.S. coinage that is certified with a grade and has a resale market. These are competitively priced and backed with our buy-back service.
The MS62 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle has one of the deepest secondary markets of any certified U.S. gold coin. Industry standard grades such as PCGS and NGC are recognized by dealers, auction houses, and private buyers all over the world without independent evaluation. Liquidity when you are ready to sell. The resale value reflects the price of the coin's 0.9675 oz gold value, plus a numismatic premium that remains stable and unchanged: Base examples (MS62) enjoy consistent demand from both entry-level collectors and bullion buyers who are looking for a coin with history. The BOLD buy-back service is easy and competitive, with no third-party fees and no long waiting period.
My grandfather ironed a handful of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, not because they were the cheapest gold coins to collect, but because they were a type of coin that made me want to learn more about them. This is still the case now. As I began BOLD Precious Metals, I was looking for coins like these just for this reason. MS62 examples are graded and certified by a grading service like PCGS or NGC and are priced close to the face value of the coin so a first-time collector doesn't have to pay an excessive numismatic premium to get started. This is the coin I would give to a man who says to me, "What is something that isn't just a gold bar that is worth having?
