2026 1 oz Australian Kangaroo Silver Coin (BU)

The Design: Two People, One Coin

Reverse — Stuart Devlin (1931–2018)

Designed by Dr. Stuart Devlin AO CGM, one of the most successful coin designers of the 20th century, the kangaroo on the obverse of this coin, symbolizing the IUCN, was created by the Australian team. The obverse kangaroo, symbolizing the IUCN, was designed by the Australian team, of which Dr. Stuart Devlin AO CGM was one of the most successful coin designers of the 20th century. Devlin was born in Geelong, Victoria, in 1931 and studied goldsmithing and silversmithing at RMIT.

At the age of 33, in 1964, he entered the competition to create Australia's new decimal coinage, which replaced the old currency of pounds and shillings when the Commonwealth of Australia changed to decimal currency on 14th February 1966. More than 60 years later, those designs (the platypus, lyrebird, echidna, frilled lizard, and five kangaroos) continue to circulate in Australia today.

Devlin was awarded the Goldsmiths' and jewellers' Royal Warrant by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1982, which he maintained until her death. During his career, he designed coins for 36 countries. He passed away in April 2018.

Devlin's reverse design is a red kangaroo set against a background of radiating sunburst rays, a deliberate link that ties the bullion coin to the most well-known Australian animal. The design is identical to the one that appeared on all Silver Kangaroo bullion editions, allowing for the series to be recognized from a distance.

Obverse — Dan Thorne

The front of the 2026 coin features King Charles III's portrait, designed by sculptor Dan Thorne. In a worldwide competition for each Commonwealth nation to design the new royal face for their coinage, Thorne's effigy was chosen to launch in Australian circulation from 2024. It depicts Charles III in full-length portraiture in left profile, without a crown, reflecting the current style of royal portraiture for bullion coins.

Why the 2026 Issue Matters.

In 2016, the Silver Kangaroo series was introduced. The obverse featured the image of Queen Elizabeth II (the Queen's effigy), first using the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait (2016–2018), then the Jody Clark portrait of Her Majesty wearing the George IV State Diadem (2019–2023). The obverse changed with the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 and the coronation of King Charles III in 2023.

The 2024 edition features the effigy of the current king, King Charles III, designed by sculptor Dan Thorne, which will debut on the coin. For the 2024 issue, the effigy on the coin is of King Charles III, designed by sculptor Dan Thorne. The 2026 coin is a continuation of that portrait. This puts the Kangaroo in the 2026 class as the 3rd in the Charles III series—in numismatics, early reign portrait changes are well known as collector points of interest. The Perth Mint bullion changeover from Elizabeth II to Charles III is, without doubt, a significant change in Australian coinage history.

It's 100 percent no different for bullion buyers as far as silver content, purity, or government backing. The Charles III early issues have already been recognized as being historically important within the series as a whole and are even more significant to collectors.

The Perth Mint has been government-backed since 1899

The Perth Mint was opened in 1899 as part of the British Royal Mint network and was constructed to deal with the gold that was being discovered on the Western Australia goldfields, as part of one of the biggest gold rushes in history. It is the oldest running mint in Australia.

The Perth Mint is owned and guaranteed by the Government of Western Australia, a state government, not a private company, whereas the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra is owned and guaranteed by the federal government. That government endorsement is found on all Perth Mint bullion products. It means that the sovereign's guarantee, not a private enterprise's quality assurance, guarantees not only the weight and purity of the coin but also its legal tender status.

The Perth Mint is LBMA-accredited, which means that the bank, the dealers, and exchanges in all major markets around the world accept the products without further verification.

The 2026 Issue features security features.

The Perth Mint introduced a micro-laser-engraved authentication feature on the Silver Kangaroo series when it launched in 2016. For the 2026 edition, a micro-laser-engraved letter is embedded in the reverse design, which can only be seen with a magnifier. This is not possible with regular counterfeiting equipment.

Use a 10x loupe or magnifying glass to view the back design close to the inscription "KANGAROO." The concealed letter is embedded in the lettering and is etched into the surface of the coin by a laser beam. Its presence indicates authenticity.

The Perth Mint "P" mintmark is also on the reverse. The micro-engraving and the mintmark are two of the on-coin authentication features that any dealer or verification service would verify.

Silver Kangaroo and Silver Eagle: A direct comparison

They both are 1 troy ounce of .999+ FINE SILVER, and they both are legal tender. This is where they are different:

Purity. Four nines, 99.99% silver, the Silver Kangaroo is the highest quality available. The American Silver Eagle is .999 fine, meaning that it contains 99.9% silver. If the silver content is 1 oz then the difference in actual silver content is approximately 0.31 grams. To most buyers, it doesn't matter, but it is a fact. Premium. The premiums for 1 oz sovereign silver coins are the highest for silver eagles, which are usually $5 to $12 above the spot rate when selling them, depending on the day and the dealer. The Kangaroo is priced lower—typically $3-$6 less than spot—due to lower global fabrication costs and a different global collector demand pattern in the U.S. market. Global liquidity. The Silver Eagle is the most popular silver coin in North America, and it is the "verifiable" silver coin most commonly used by U.S. buyers and sellers. The Kangaroo is world-famous and is actively traded in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, where Perth Mint purity (.9999) is often more valued. Both are immediately valued and repurchased in the American dealer market. IRA. Both qualify. The Silver Kangaroo is government-backed by the state of Western Australia and is .9999 pure, so it meets the minimum fineness requirements set by the IRS. Face value. The Kangaroo is a $1 AUD face value, symbolic legal tender. The Eagle's cash value is $1.00. There is no practical value for bullion use for either face value.

Why a generic round vs. a dated coin?

A dated sovereign coin from the Perth Mint doesn't have to be a generic round: it has a government guarantee on its weight and purity, it is legal tender money, it has a traceable mintage, and it has an annual collector interest that dated issues provide. Generic .999 rounds can be used at the lowest premium for stacking but will return at spot minus the spot value at resale. A Perth Mint Kangaroo is sold at a premium by all of the big dealers and purchased at a premium.

The 2026 date is also important in the long term. The Kangaroo series has experienced wildly different mintages across the years, with a couple of years seeing several hundred thousand coins minted, and the 2020 series reaching more than 13 million. Typically, the collector market has offered a premium price for all lower mintage years. It will ultimately be a case of the numbers, but the framework for 2026 is in place.
