South Dakota Sales Tax Guide

This tax guide provides a detailed and technical, yet easy-to-read, overview of the state sales tax rules for BOLD Precious Metals in South Dakota. As BOLD is not currently required to collect state sales tax in South Dakota, we do not have a sales tax license number. However, we continually analyze these requirements and will update our customers should the status requirement change.

"In South Dakota, the sales tax rules for precious metals depend on the type of item"

Tax Exempt:

  1. Antique and rare coins, formerly accepted as official currency in the United States or various nations, possess value determined by scarcity, popularity, condition, and production quantity. This encompasses pristine coins and authenticated proofs.

  2. Paper currency, formerly accepted as official payment in the United States and other nations, now holds value determined by its scarcity, market demand, and state of preservation.

  3. Coins manufactured in the USA or other nations using pure metals such as as gold, silver, platinum, or palladium, the value of which is set by changes in the global price of precious metals. According to 26 USCS  § 408(m), such coins can be stored in an IRA and are often obtained as assets.

  4. Bars, ingots, or other products comprising pure gold of 99.5% or higher and silver of 99.9% pure, platinum of 99.95% fineness or higher, refined valuable metals of 99.95% pure or more, or purified palladium of 90% purity or higher but below required purity criteria.

Taxable at State Sales Tax Rate:

  1. These bars, ingots, or other forms contain refined precious metals with a purity of 90% or higher but fall short of meeting the minimum fineness standards. They encompass refined gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
