The large, mature male silverback featured on the coin's obverse is truly astounding! Two of the three previous releases in the series have focused on the gorilla's ability to demonstrate intense ferociousness in the face of immiment danger.

This fourth design depicts the silverback in somewhat of a quiet, thoughtful state. In each separate troop of gorillas, a single mature silverback assumes sole leadership and defends the group. When defense is necessary, the silverback throws all 4-foot, 400 pounds of his fierceness into the situation. Otherwise, he is generally docile in everyday activities.

Exquisite Detail

The silverback is displayed head and shoulders, looking in your general direction as though carefully studying the situation. He obviously doesn't sense danger, or his calm appearence would show signs of alert and concern. Every detail of his expression is simply exquisite!

This amazing close-up view of the gorilla's massive head and shoulders almost entirely fills the center field of the coin. He is encircled by attractive border markings at the rim. Arched over the silverback's image is the inscription "Congo Silverback Gorilla" and below is the coin's date, weight and purity. The reverse displays the crest of the Republic of Congo and face value of 5,000 Francs CFA.
