As a legal tender offering of New Zealand, the obverse of both coins in the set display the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions encircling the rim include, "NEW ZEALAND . 999 Ag 1 oz. ELIZABETH II . 2021."
The reverse of Coin 1 of the set has a puhoro motif that surrounds Tangaroa making reference to his ability to control the tides and waves. Inscriptions encircling the top rim include the face value in both English and Maori, "ONE DOLLAR . KOTAHI TARA" At the bottom rim is displayed "TANGAROA . GUARDIAN OF THE OCEAN."
The reverse of Coin 2 of the set, the puhoro design traditionally refers to speed and agility, depicting the cutting or rippling effect of the water or waves when a waka (canoe) travels. The sea creatures within the design represent the many stories, traditions and lineage of Tangaroa, including the tohora or whale. Whales are viewed as the guardians of navigators. According to Maori oral tradition, whales guided canoes to New Zealand, and the ancestor Paikea is said to have arrived riding a whale. Inscriptions follow the same as on Coin 1.
