Gold 1 oz America Buffalo BU *Random Date

The 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin is the United States Mint's first .9999 fine gold bullion coin, struck in 24-karat gold since 2006 and backed by the U.S. government for weight and purity. Buying it as a Random Date means BOLD ships whichever year is in current stock, which is how the lowest available premium gets passed to the buyer. The coin's design and gold content are identical across every year it has been struck, so the date stamped on the coin has no bearing on its gold value. Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition means the coin ships in original Mint luster, never circulated, with no wear from handling or use as legal tender.

Design

Obverse

A composite profile of Native American chiefs, drawing on Iron Tail, Two Moons, and likely Big Tree, created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, with "LIBERTY" inscribed above.

This is the same design Fraser created for the 1913–1938 Buffalo Nickel, reissued in gold starting in 2006.

Reverse

An American bison standing in profile, modeled on "Black Diamond," a bison housed at the Central Park Zoo in New York in the early 1900s, one of the most referenced wildlife portraits ever struck on U.S. coinage.

History

James Earle Fraser, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was commissioned by the Treasury Department in 1912 to design a coin with distinctly American character, a deliberate break from the European-style allegorical figures that had dominated U.S. coinage up to that point. Fraser modeled the obverse as a composite portrait drawn from several Native American sitters, including Iron Tail, Two Moons, and likely Big Tree, rather than a single individual. His Buffalo Nickel entered circulation on March 4, 1913, and became one of the most recognisable coin designs in American history within a generation, remaining in production until 1938. In 2006, the U.S. Mint revived Fraser's design for the American Buffalo Gold Coin, striking it in .9999 fine gold, making it the Mint's first 24-karat bullion coin, a full grade above the .9167 purity used on the American Gold Eagle. The choice to use a century-old, culturally significant design rather than a new one was deliberate: it gave the Mint's first ultra-pure gold coin a design pedigree investors and collectors already recognised and trusted.
