Air-Tite is a brand name, but the capsules have a very reliable, friction-fit air and very air and moisture-resistant seal. But at the molecular level, over many years, there is no true airtight sealed non-hermetically sealed plastic holder. The capsule gives an impeccable seal that will severely hinder the natural toning process, as it shields the coin against airborne pollutants such as sulfur. To reduce toning over time, encapsulated coins are most optimally stored in a dry, stable and, ideally cool, climate, frequently using desiccants such as silica gel.

Air-Tite capsules are designed to stay securely closed. The safest method for opening one is to use a thin, sharp blade like a utility knife. Carefully insert the tip of the blade into the seam where the two halves meet and give a gentle twist to pry them apart slightly. Repeat this at several points around the edge until the seal is broken enough to separate the halves with your fingers. Always perform this action slowly and carefully over a soft surface, like a towel, to protect the coin.

Yes, Air-Tite capsules can be reused. However, keep in mind that prying the capsule open may cause minor cosmetic marks on the plastic edge. After being opened and closed several times, the friction fit of the seal may become slightly less tight than when it was new. For maximum security for your most valuable pieces, using a new capsule is always the best practice.

A "Direct Fit" capsule, like this Model A22, is molded to the exact dimensions of a specific coin for a snug, secure fit with no movement. A "Ring Type" capsule has a larger universal housing and uses interchangeable foam rings of different sizes. Ring-type holders are more versatile for coins with odd or worn diameters, while direct-fit holders offer a more minimalist, crystal-clear presentation for coins of a standard size.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride), is a chemical plasticizer commonly used to produce the soft plastic flips and album pages. Eventually, PVC erodes and leaches, causing acidic interaction with a coin metal. It leaves behind a unique green, gummy or milky film that when left unchecked will permanently corrode and pit the surface of the coin rendering it useless as numismatic investment. To prevent PVC damage, only those storage products are to be used that definitely say they are PVC-free, i.e. hard acrylic capsules (like this Air-Tite A22), Mylar flips, or polyethylene bags.

If one has a big number of encapsulated coins to organize and store, special storage systems are what should be used. Single type capsules (e.g. all Model 'A' capsules) can be tidily packed in special plastic coin tubes. Archival quality storage boxes of the type produced by companies such as Guardhouse are a great option when a larger collection is being stored or displayed. These boxes are designed with foam-filled cuts which keep the capsules in position without the rattling and scratching. Placing these boxes in a cool and dry environment that can be a safe at home is one of the best ways of offering multi-level protection.

It is a personal strategy. With lower-premium bullion coins that are only stacked by weight (such as generic silver rounds), most collectors keep them in their original mint tubes to keep costs and storage space to a minimum. A slab also encapsulates the coin in a hard plastic holder, but it crucially includes the TPG's expert opinion on the coin's authenticity and grade (its condition on a 1-70 scale). For rare or high-value numismatic coins, slabbing is the industry standard as it provides authentication and a certified grade, which establishes market value.
