The Model I System Explained: Ensuring a Perfect Fit for Your Collection

One of the more frequently misunderstood aspects among collectors refers to Air-Tite sizing system. The comprehension of it is the key to the creation of cohesive and perfectly integrated storage solution. The inner ring diameter (38mm) defines the coin that is placed in the capsule whereas the capsule model letter (Model I) addresses the outer measures of the capsules and is essential in determining the compatibility with the storage accessories.

The Model I capsule is all the same, in external diameter, 51.58mm (2.031 inches). This particular dimension makes the perfect, secure fit in storage systems that were created to hold either a Model I or an Extra Large capsule e.g. multi-slot display boxes and storage tubes. Using the model letter of your capsule to pair with your storage box, you also ensure a professionally designed rattle-free system that allows the entirety of your collection to remain compact and out of harm.

Material Integrity: The Science of Coin Preservation

Not all plastics are the same. The chemical stability of storage conditions depends specifically on the long-term safety of your collection. These Air-Tite capsules are injection molded out of a high-impact, scratch resistant, acrylic, a material selected based upon its exemplary clarity and inert qualities. Our acrylic will not break down, get gooey at temperatures that are too high, nor ooze poisonous chemicals onto your coin over the years as unlike the cheap, flexible plastics that use harmful plasticizers (the softening agent in PVC), our rigid acrylic is a stable polymer that will stay in its original state no matter what the temperature inside the plastic case or the material used to hold it.

The black ring is made of Volara which is an inert cross-linked polyethylene foam. It is archivally safe to protect indefinitely, in a straight contact with your greatest, most valuable, silver, gold and copper coins, so that the only thing in contact with your coin is as safe as the coin itself.

Collector's Guide: Proper Use & Handling

How to Safely Capsulate Your Coin

  • You should always handle your valuable coins by the edges, and, preferably with soft cotton gloves. This avoids the washing off of the corrosive oils on your skin which would leave lasting fingerprints on the surface of the coin.
  • Insert the black polyethylene foam ring into the bottom of the capsule (the bottom half cut deeper than the upper half).
  • Insert your coin in the ring-lined base carefully and make it sit evenly.
  • Place the cover (the half that is not so deep) over the base. Squeeze down over the whole of the capsules with even pressure, til you can feel and hear a crisp snap. This ensures that the two halves have locked in place forming a protective, secure seal.

How to Safely Open an Air-Tite Capsule

  • Though the seal is deliberately closed to allow maximum protection, the capsule may be unlocked without damaging it or the coin that is contained in the capsule.
  • Insert edge of something thin and stout, as pocket knife or a capsule opener designed, into the little seam that forms the circumference of the two halves where they join.
  • Twist the tool lightly and force the halves open.
  • You might have to work around the capsule in order to open it symmetrically.
  • Use as little force as possible that can lead to scratching the acrylic or abrupt movement of the coin.
