Eventually, mainly due to the effects of variations in temperature and humidity, the plasticizers in PVC break down and are released which causes a reaction with the metal surface of the coin forming an acidic solution. The by-product of this process is a devastating by-product that is generally presented in the form of sticky and greenish looking slime or a milky and hazy film. Nor is it mere tarnish; it is active corrosion, capable of permanently etching the surface of the coin to leave minute pits, and causing irreparable damage to the coin with effects on the numismatic value which may be disastrous.
