2023 Silver 1 oz Niue Hibernia BU

The 2023 1 oz Niue Silver Hibernia Coin pays tribute to Hibernia, the ancient female personification of Ireland, in .9999 fine silver from the European Mint and official legal tender of the Government of Niue. It is the second annual Hibernia release, with a totally new design on the obverse, which incorporates the national Coat of Arms of Niue. The reverse features Hibernia, dressed in a robe, helmet and holding a spear and the iconic Irish harp surrounded by a radial sunburst, creating an additional distinction for this 2023 issue, when compared to the inaugural Tokelau issue of 2022, which had a straight sunburst design. The reverse displays Hibernia, wearing a robe, helmet, and holding a spear and the iconic Irish harp, set against a radial sunburst background, further distinguishing this 2023

Design

The Reverse Profile: Hibernia is poised proudly on the edge of the Irish sea, with flowing robes and a Corinthian helmet, a spear in one hand and the traditional Irish harp in the other, her hair and robes caught in the wind. The background is filled with light and energy, radiating outwards from the upper left corner in a radial pattern, which is a key design element of the 2023 version compared to the 2022 release. Inscribed: "HIBERNIA · 1 oz · .9999 FINE SILVER."

The Obverse Profile: The Public Seal / Coat of Arms of Niue (Outer Ring of Garlands around the inner circle of plants native to Niue Island with a crown on top). This will supersede the Queen Elizabeth II effigy featured on the 2022 Tokelau coin, thus providing another new national identity for the 2023 coin. Inscribed: "NIUE · 2023 · 2 DOLLARS."

Hibernia — Ireland's Ancient Personification

Hibernia, Classical Latin for Ireland, was the word used by Roman geographers and historians to refer to the island to the west of Britain. Personified, Hibernia evolved into one of the most potent symbols of the nation's cultural and political history – especially from the 18th century onwards.

The most famous representation of her is over the General Post Office in Dublin, where a statue by sculptor Edward Smyth depicts her holding a harp and a spear, symbols of Ireland's culture and national identity.

The Irish harp she carries is Ireland's oldest national symbol, and has been featured on Irish coin, government seals and documents for centuries. The Corinthian helmet and spear were emblematic of strength, sovereignty and the protection of the Irish identity and were used by nationalist artists and printmakers to represent Hibernia as a figure of resilience and pride.

About the Hibernia Series

The Hibernia series was launched by the European Mint in 2022 as part of a series of five new silver bullion series celebrating the national identity of the British Isles. This was the first time the coin has been issued in 2022 and was struck for Tokelau, which used the design of the Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The 2023 version featured the national Coat of Arms of Niue on the front and the royal portrait was removed, instead, a radial sunburst background was used on the reverse of the stamp. These changes in design ensure that each release in the series is unique in appearance and will, therefore, have a high level of collectibility value from year to year.

About European Mint

European Mint is a private mint devoted to .9999 fine silver sovereign bullion coins in partnership with island nations in the Pacific, such as Niue and Tokelau. The five new series that debuted in March 2022 reflect Irish heritage, Welsh identity, and more, and in just a few years, European Mint has already made a name for itself as a major force in the themed sovereign silver sector, creating immediate recognition value with high-purity silver content and intricate portrait design.
