European Mint's 2023 Niue Jolly Roger: Blackbeard is the second coin in the company's Jolly Roger series, legally issued by the Government of Niue. Struck from 1 troy oz of .9999 fine silver in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, the coin's reverse recreates Blackbeard's personal pirate flag, one of the most recognizable symbols from the Golden Age of Piracy. With a worldwide mintage limited to 15,000 coins, this is a collectible sovereign silver coin with strong historical appeal. BOLD is an Authorized Dealer of European Mint products.

Reverse — Blackbeard's Jolly Roger Flag

The reverse features a relief interpretation of Blackbeard's personal Jolly Roger flag. The design shows a crowned skeleton holding a goblet in one hand and a spear in the other, pointing toward a bleeding heart.

This imagery was meant to intimidate. The skeleton represented death, the goblet suggested damnation or a toast to the Devil, and the spear aimed at the heart warned of the fate awaiting those who resisted. The crown symbolized Blackbeard's self-styled rule over the seas. The coin inscriptions confirm the attribution: "BLACKBEARD · JOLLY ROGER · 1 oz · 9999 FINE SILVER."

Obverse — Coat of Arms of Niue

The obverse displays the official Coat of Arms of Niue, the issuing authority for this legal-tender coin. Niue is a self-governing island nation in free association with New Zealand and uses the New Zealand Dollar, which explains the $2 NZD face value.

The obverse also includes the inscriptions "NIUE 2023" and the coin's denomination, confirming its sovereign legal-tender status.

Who Was Blackbeard?

Blackbeard, also known as Edward Teach, was an English pirate active in the Caribbean and along the eastern coast of the British American colonies from around 1716 to 1718. He became one of the most feared figures of the Golden Age of Piracy.

One of his most infamous acts was the blockade of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1718, where he captured several merchant ships using his flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge. Blackbeard was also known for psychological warfare. Before battle, he reportedly placed slow-burning fuses in his beard, creating a terrifying smoke-filled appearance meant to intimidate enemies.

Blackbeard was killed on November 22, 1718, during a battle against Royal Navy Lieutenant Robert Maynard near Ocracoke Island, North Carolina.

The Jolly Roger Series

European Mint's Jolly Roger series celebrates the distinctive pirate flags used during the Golden Age of Piracy. Each release recreates the personal flag of a famous pirate in fine silver, preserving the visual language pirates used to identify themselves and frighten their targets.

The 2023 Blackbeard coin is the second release in the series. Collectors building the complete set gain a themed collection documenting some of the most famous pirate symbols in maritime history.

Mintage Context — 15,000 Worldwide

With a worldwide mintage of 15,000 coins, the 2023 Blackbeard release offers a practical balance between availability and scarcity. It is limited enough to maintain collector appeal while still being actively traded in the secondary market.

The combination of .9999 fine silver, sovereign legal-tender status, pirate-history theme, and fixed mintage provides value beyond silver content alone.
