1 oz Legendary Warriors: Hannibal Silver Round (BU)

The 1 oz Legendary Warriors: Hannibal SilverTowne Mint is the 9th coin in the highly successful 10-coin Legendary Warriors Series celebrating one of history's most powerful military commanders. This commemorative round was minted from .999 fine silver, honoring Hannibal Barca, the Carthaginian military leader credited with introducing innovative tactics and launching the audacious invasion of Italy which earned him respect and fear for over 2,000 years.

Manufactured by SilverTowne Mint, a leading private mint in the United States since 1973 producing quality silver bullion, this round features a top-tier investment-grade silver content coupled with a richly detailed design which portrays Hannibal as the king at the peak of his legendary campaign against Rome.

Hannibal Barca — Rome's Greatest Adversary

Hannibal Barca was born in Carthage, the centre of a powerful sea empire located in modern-day Tunisia, which had been a rival of Rome for many years in control of the central Mediterranean. Ancient sources say that at the age of nine or ten, Hannibal was sworn in by his father Hamilcar Barca, one of the most prominent Carthaginian generals during the First Punic War, of eternal hatred for Rome. That oath would be his life-long mission for Hannibal.

Hannibal invaded the Roman ally, Saguntum, in Hispania (modern-day Spain) in 219 BC, sparking the Second Punic War (218–201 BC). Instead of encountering the superior naval power of Rome at sea, Hannibal decided to attack the Italian peninsula from the land — through Spain, crossing the Pyrenees, over Gaul and finally over the Alps. Tens of thousands of soldiers, and an army of war elephants, Hannibal was recorded crossing the Alps, one of the most daring acts in military history. The death of nearly half of his army and almost all his elephants was reported in the crossing of the mountains but he went on to Italy anyway.

In Italy, Hannibal suffered a series of crushing defeats to the Romans, at the Trebia in 209 BC, at Lake Trasimene in 209 BC and most importantly at Cannae in 216 BC. At Cannae, Hannibal surrounded and destroyed a larger Roman army, in what was a tactic studied in military academies around the world as a 'double envelopment'. The number of Roman casualties is estimated at 55,000 to 70,000, one of the most devastating defeats in Roman history. Even though Hannibal had a terrible success, he did not march on Rome but instead moved on to Rome's outskirts.

For more than ten years Hannibal did not suffer a defeat in Italy, but Rome did learn to adapt, and, though they never engaged him in combat, they were able to recuperate and strengthen themselves. Finally, fourteen years later, Hannibal was defeated by the Roman general Scipio Africanus at the Battle of Zama, 202 BC, where Scipio applied tactics that he had learned from Hannibal's victory at Cannae. Hannibal's reputation as a field commander was so dreaded that for generations to come, Roman mothers were said to have threatened their poorly behaved children with Hannibal's coming, ‘Hannibal is at the gates' which remains a popular expression of the imminent, overwhelming threat of today.

Obverse Design — Hannibal

Hannibal is portrayed as he might have looked in his time of conquering the Alps and leading his army. Hannibal is dressed in a lion pelt, a symbol of his ferocity on the battlefield, as he traverses the Alps to lead his army.

  • His left eye is bandaged over, symbolizing his many battles and sufferings.
  • He is carrying a spear, symbolizing his role and identity as a warrior and commander.
  • In the background, a ruined Rome can be seen, a powerful visual reminder of the destruction that his campaigns wrought on the Roman heartland.

The top of the design is marked with the name 'HANNIBAL', the warrior's name.

Reverse Design — Legendary Warriors Series Emblem

Allows for mixing up reverse designs for all releases in the Legendary Warriors Series, which is composed of historical weaponry representing all the warriors honored in the series.

The inscription is a series identifier 'LEGENDARY WARRIORS' and a mark of precious metal '1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER'.

When displayed together, the unified reverse design makes it possible for the entire 10-coin series to be seen as a unified set.
