History and Story

The United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, was established April 24, 1946, by order of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Chester Nimitz.

The mission was threefold: generate public support for naval aviation, boost Navy morale in the postwar drawdown, and demonstrate carrier-based aircraft capability at a moment when defense budgets were shrinking. Admiral Ralph Davison selected Lieutenant Commander Roy "Butch" Voris, a decorated World War II fighter ace, to assemble and lead the new team. The first public demonstration took place June 15, 1946, at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, flying Grumman F6F-5 Hellcats, the same carrier fighter that had dominated Pacific air combat just months before. The team adopted the name "Blue Angels" in July 1946, inspired by an advertisement for The Blue Angel nightclub in New York City spotted in The New YorkerOver eight decades, the Blue Angels have flown eleven distinct aircraft types, a progression that mirrors the arc of American military aviation itself.

The propeller-driven F6F Hellcat and F8F Bearcat gave way to early jets in the 1950s: the F9F Panther, F9F Cougar, and F-11 Tiger. The F-4 Phantom introduced two-seat formation flying in the late 1960s; the more agile A-4 Skyhawk followed in 1974. In 1986, the team transitioned to the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet for their 40th anniversary, flying it for thirty-five years, the longest tenure of any aircraft in Blue Angels history. In 2021, on their 75th anniversary, they upgraded to the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the aircraft depicted on this silver roundToday, the team includes six Navy and one Marine Corps pilot, performing sixty-plus shows at thirty-two-plus U.S. locations annually, making the Blue Angels the second-oldest formal aerobatic team in the world, behind only France's Patrouille de France, founded in 1931.
