2025 10 oz British Tudor Beasts: Greyhound of Richmond Silver Coin (BU)

The 2025 Royal Mint Tudor Beasts Greyhound of Richmond 10 oz Silver Coin is the 7th coin in The Royal Mint's ever popular series of the Royal Tudor Beasts, available here in an impressive 10 oz troy format perfect for stackers and collectors who appreciate substantial silver weights with compelling heraldic tales. This coin is a 999.9 fine silver (4 nines) Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) face value £10 (Ten Pounds Sterling) United Kingdom legal tender issued by the British government.

The reverse, designed by sculptor David Lawrence, who has worked on the rest of the Tudor Beasts series and had his work praised for its heraldic detail, includes The White Greyhound of Richmond, a royal symbol which dates back to the 14th century and has a history that spans the rise of the Tudor dynasty and the legitimacy of the English monarchy. This is one of the biggest and heaviest in the series at 10 oz. A true statement piece for serious collectors.

The Royal Tudor Beasts Collection — Context

In October 2021 The Royal Mint is launching its new Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, which follows in the footsteps of the very popular Queen's Beasts series. The series consists of 10 coins issued over a number of years and is directly inspired by the 10 sculpted stone beasts that stand guard at the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace, which were royal heraldic figures commissioned by Henry VIII to mark his ancestry and marriage to his third wife Jane Seymour in 1536.

One of each of these heraldic creatures is portrayed on every coin in the series: real animals and mythical beasts that symbolised the Tudor dynasty's history, strength and authority. With its position in the middle of the third set of 10 coins, this issue will arrive at the end of the year, especially fitting for set collectors who are filling their Tudor Beasts collections in different formats and weights.

The Heraldic Story of the White Greyhound of Richmond

The Greyhound of Richmond has one of the most complex and historically rich tales of any beast in the Tudor collection. It has been on a heraldic journey of almost 600 years:

  • The greyhound was first used as a heraldic emblem by King Edward III, whose reign lasted 50 years (1327–1377) which was among the longest in English history. The greyhound was a personal royal badge of Edward III; a symbol of loyalty, courage, speed and aristocracy.
  • They became the greyhound in their coat of arms and passed it on to the House of Lancaster during the dynastic warfare that raged through 15th century England.
  • The White Greyhound is thus associated with the Richmond title and Tudor ancestry, as the king, Henry VI, granted them the title of Earl of Richmond in 1449 and the Greyhound as a supporter to their coat of arms.
  • King Henry VII (Tudor) was the son of Edmund Tudor and his first Tudor king after defeating King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Henry VII wore the White Greyhound to symbolise his Lancastrian and Beaufort blood, and attached it to his Royal Arms to assert his legitimacy to the throne.
  • The Hampton Court Palace stone beasts were commissioned by Henry VIII, the same man who had commissioned the Hampton Court Palace stone beasts, including the Greyhound of Richmond, were among the 10 King's Beasts located on the Moat Bridge, making the connection between him and Edward III via the Lancaster and Tudor lines.
  • Charles III, a direct descendant of this same royal bloodline, carries this royal history forward — the obverse of this coin depicts Charles III, a living descendant of the endless royal bloodline that the Greyhound represents.

Reverse Design — The Greyhound of Richmond (David Lawrence)

The designer of the reverse was sculptor David Lawrence who was the principal artist for the Royal Tudor Beasts Collection. The stone figure of the Greyhound of Richmond which is located on Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, is a direct inspiration to his work:

  • In an alert pose, the White Greyhound is depicted in a slender silhouette, with all its features sculpted in exquisite detail.
  • The greyhound is a heraldic guardian of the Crown, on its shield painted the Three Lions of England (passant guardant).
  • Surface animation is an innovative micro engraving process done on the coin's field, which offers enhanced anti-counterfeiting security measures and remarkable visual depth, especially when illuminated with varying light sources.
  • On the reverse are inscriptions: GREYHOUND OF RICHMOND and 2025.
  • The level of sculptural detail David Lawrence can achieve on the substantial 10 oz canvas is far more impressive than on the smaller sizes of the same design.

Obverse Design — King Charles III (Martin Jennings)

On the obverse is the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III designed by sculptor Martin Jennings:

  • The King is seen in a left-profile portrait, with no crown, as the design was deliberate by Martin Jennings to give a more human and approachable image of the King.
  • It is the first portrait to be released on UK coinage in late 2022, and is the first official portrait of King Charles III.
  • The inscriptions read: CHARLES III | D.G. REX. F.D. (Dei Gratia Rex Fidei Defensor — 'By the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith') | 10 POUNDS
  • The 10 oz silver weight of the coin is the reason for the £10 denomination, as opposed to the 2 oz format's denomination of £5.

Security — Surface Animation Technology

  • Special features of this coin include the surface animation on the reverse, which is a new feature for the Royal Mint and only visible to the naked eye but has the effect of a textured background pattern, which would be extremely difficult to achieve without the Royal Mint precision manufacturing equipment.
  • When the coin is tilted under the light, it gives a moving shimmering optical effect.
  • Increases the difficulty for copies to be made — the pattern is not easily chemically etched or die-copied.
  • Featuring in the Royal Mint's most prestigious bullion series such as Britannia coins and the Tudor Beasts collection.
  • Especially useful when it comes to a 10 oz. coin that will be used for a bigger single purchase, where the authenticity verification is even more critical to the purchase.

A Note on Finish Options

This is the standard investment grade bullion format called BU (Brilliant Uncirculated). In addition, the Royal Mint has a Proof finish version of this 10 oz Greyhound of Richmond which is struck to a higher standard and has a mirror-like field and frosted design elements – the mintage is a strictly limited mintage of 40 coins, packaged in dedicated presentation packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity. Rare versions of this release are available and collectors seeking them specifically should ask about Proof.

Investment & Collecting Case

  • 7th of 10 — the scarcity of the series has now reached its final stage with 3 more Tudor Beasts coins to go.
  • Four nines purity silver is .9999 fine — the highest standard purity achieved in regular bullion production.
  • 10 troy ounces of silver: A sizable single coin silver piece, with a high weight of silver and a larger canvas on which to render fine figurative details.
  • Legal tender £10 and supported by the British government, institutional credibility beyond that of private mint rounds.
  • British coinage has been struck by one of the world's oldest and most prestigious government coin mints — the Royal Mint — for more than 1,100 years.
  • CGT exempt for UK buyers: This coin is legal tender in the United Kingdom, and will be exempt from Capital Gains Tax for United Kingdom residents, which is a very substantial tax benefit for British collectors.
