Nicely rendered in fine relief, Christ is suspended on a wooden cross, his head low and thorn-crowned, haloed. Written above him are the letters "INRI"—the abbreviation for Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum ("Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews"). The plain background and pared-down imagery give total focus to the act of sacrifice, drawing consideration of faith, suffering, and redemption.
