The 2024 Gibraltar Lady Justice Silver Coin is the 4th in a series of Lady Justice Coins produced by Scottsdale Mint and struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver with an antiqued finish and limited to 10,000 coins sold worldwide. They are packaged individually in a Scottsdale Mint capsule on a Scottsdale Mint chipboard. Face Value: £1 Gibraltar Pound, fully endorsed by the Government of Gibraltar. It is an aged version finish, as opposed to the standard BU, that enhances the visibility of the engraving details in the Lady Justice robes and the background detail of the coin, as the recessed areas of the design are oxidized, providing much greater contrast and depth to the design.

Design - Obverse and Reverse

Obverse — Lady Justice

On the obverse is Lady Justice in full figure, Greco-Roman style, in full relief with a blindfold. In her right hand, she has a sword and in her left hand a balance. There are six engraved stars with radial lines on the mountain in the background, which are specific to the 2024 release. Each annual release in the Lady Justice series is a little different in design, with the only variation being this mountain background, making it a bit different for collectors who want to track the entire series. On the obverse, "FIDES ET JUSTITIA" — the Latin phrase for "Faith and Justice."

Gibraltar Coat of Arms—Reverse

The Gibraltar Coat of Arms is on the reverse with the coin's weight and purity, metal content and denomination. The coat of arms incorporates the traditional coat of arms of Gibraltarians, comprising the white and red escutcheon with three towers and a golden key hanging below. On the reverse (over the Gibraltarian arms) there are elements of the Royal Arms of England, the quartered shield with the Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland, indicating that Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. The inscriptions say: "1 TROY OUNCE. GIBRALTAR. 999 FINE SILVER. 1 POUND" and the year of issue.

Lady Justice: The Iconography Behind the Design

Lady Justice is not one woman who comes from one tradition; she is a composite of at least two ancient archetypes. The primary source is Iustitia, the Roman goddess of justice, who embodied the law and moral order of the universe in Roman religion. Its Greek equivalent is Themis, one of the Titans in Greek mythology that ruled on law, custom, and divine order. Both are shown in classical art carrying scales and swords, representing the weighing of evidence and the power to act upon it. The blindfold is a later addition. It was not a common practice to represent the Roman Iustitia or the Greek Themis without a blindfold. In the legal symbolism of Europe, the blindfold came into use in the 15th and 16th centuries as an expression of the principle that justice is blind and treats everyone equally, irrespective of race, class, or circumstances of birth or wealth. It does not appear as a serious legal symbol in German manuscripts until about 1494, and is soon adopted to judicial iconography in the West for the next hundred years. The three elements are combined on this coin: scales - weighing of evidence, sword - authority to enforce a verdict, and blindfold - impartiality.

The flag of Gibraltar and its coat of arms

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory of 6.8 km² located at the South end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea. It was transferred to Britain in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and has been British ever since. The Gibraltar Pound, a local legal tender currency with a parity rate fixed at 1:1 with the British Pound Sterling, allows Gibraltar to mint its own commemorative coins and bullion coins, such as this one. This coat of arms was granted over 200 years before Britain's control in 1502 by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella. The three towers that form the castle are the three peaks of the fortified Rock of Gibraltar. The golden key hanging beneath the castle is the emblem, symbolizing Gibraltar as the 'Key to the Mediterranean' – a strategic chokepoint between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. That is the same designation and coat of arms that has been on the official coat of arms of Gibraltar for more than five hundred years.

About the Lady Justice Series

The Lady Justice series is minted under the legal tender of Gibraltar for the Scottsdale Mint. A new release is issued each year in four different formats: 1 oz silver BU, 1 oz silver antiqued, 1 oz gold, and 1/10 oz gold. This is the 4th Annual coin of 2024. The design is more or less the same in all years (Lady Justice on the front and Gibraltar Coat of Arms on the back), the only change being what is printed on the mountain background which changes year-to-year meaning comparisons are more or less meaningful for series collectors.
