2024 1 oz Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner & Kraken Silver Coin (BU, Colored)

The 2024 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner & Kraken Silver Coin is the 7th in Scottsdale Mint's EC8 Series of silver and gold coins celebrating the 8 countries of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. Each coin is struck in .999 fine silver, colorized and has a Certificate of Authenticity and is shipped in a display box and capsule, with the certificate of authenticity, with just a total of 500 coins minted worldwide. It is legal tender in the Eastern Caribbean and represented by the Eastern Caribbean Dollars (XCD) which is fully backed by the ECCB. Scottsdale Mint's 2024 chapter was inspired by two strands of the history of the Caribbean that connect in the same scene: the rum runners who operated these waters during American Prohibition and the Kraken, the sea monster of Caribbean maritime lore.

The obverse is the ECCB Seal

The front of the coin features the official seal of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (two crossed wreaths with the ECCB insignia), surrounded by the inscriptions "EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK. 1 OZ .999 SILVER. TWO DOLLARS." The seal is indicative of the legal tender characteristics of the coin and of the monetary power of eight Caribbean nations.

Reverse — Rum Runner and Kraken

This is the other side where the colored pattern is displayed. At night, a traditional sailing ship (rum runner) is in open water, its sails taut with the wind. The Kraken emerges from the ocean below, with its tentacles stretching into the air like tentacles and gripping the ship's sides. The scene is rendered in full color: deep ocean blues and greens, lit sails, the creature's limbs in vibrant detail, and dark water. Inscriptions: "ANTIGUA & BARBUDA. 2024."

The History: Rum Running in the Caribbean

The rum runner on the reverse is not fiction. It's a true history in Caribbean and American history. During American Prohibition (1920–1933), the manufacture and sale of alcohol were illegal in the United States. The Caribbean, in turn, reacted by making it the main conduit of one of the most lucrative smuggling operations in history. All across the region, islands developed their seagoing infrastructure to provide millions of gallons of rum to American customers willing to pay top dollar. Fast, shallow-draft sailing boats and early motorboats sailed at night along coastal shipping routes, bringing cargo into Florida, the Gulf Coast, and East Coast ports, bypassing Coast Guard patrols. The sailors who worked on these ships were called rum runners, a term now commonplace in the Caribbean and stemming from this time. As a microcosm in the midst of a larger regional network, Antigua & Barbuda participated in the Caribbean economy of the Prohibition era.

The Mythology: The Kraken in Caribbean Lore

The term "Kraken" comes from the myths and legends of the North and Norse seas, but during the golden age of piracy in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Caribbean developed its own unique version of the legend. A giant, territorial, and active in shallow waters around the island chains, Caribbean sailors and pirates described a creature unlike the one described in Europe. Pirates and privateers employed the stories of Kraken in a clever manner: tales of a sea monster in a particular area of water were a good way to deter pursuit, and when a rival ship suddenly vanished, it was blamed on Kraken to keep the fears alive and add to the myth. The Kraken was so much more than a monster: it was a legend and a tactical weapon, a myth that guided the way sailors sailed and how other crews reacted. It's historically accurate in spirit to include the Kraken with the rum runner: both were true elements of Caribbean maritime life at different times—one mythological, one economic—and both influenced the world's perception of these islands and the seas around them.

The EC8 Series and Eastern Caribbean Central Bank

The EC8 Series is authorized by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), a central bank for eight island countries: Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Anguilla, which was established in 1983.The ECCB holds the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD), which has been pegged to the U.S. dollar at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 per dollar since 1976, one of the longest of all the currency pegs in the Western Hemisphere. All of the EC8 coins feature the ECCB stamp and the $2 face value of the country of origin, are full legal tender and are backed by the issuing country. The Antigua & Barbuda coin is part of a collection of eight different reverse designs that are released each year, with the 2024 design being the 7th in the program.
