The Mountain Chicken: One of the World's Most Endangered Frogs
Among the most severely threatened amphibians in the Western Hemisphere—and its tale is one of the most dire conservation stories in the entire EC8 series—is The Mountain Chicken (Leptodactylus fallax).
Although it sounds like a weird name for a bird, the mountain chicken is a frog. A very popular frog in Dominica, but it is nearing extinction from the importation of invasive species, loss of habitat and hunting. A harmful fungus to amphibians that grew was another major contributor to their demise.
The frog was given this name because of its taste and appearance – historically, the meat of the Mountain Chicken was considered to be a local delicacy and was hunted and fished by locals, but its century of exploitation, combined with the chytrid fungus epidemic that wiped out populations around the world, brought it close to extinction. At one time the Mountain Chicken was prevalent in several Caribbean islands, but its distribution range has shrunk significantly and Dominica and Montserrat are amongst the remaining strongholds.
Since 2018, Scottsdale Mint has been minting EC8s each year. 8 designs are released each year and focused on different island countries of the Eastern Caribbean. The obverse features the design of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, which was first introduced in 2023 on all EC8 coins after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022. These inscriptions verify that the coin is legal tender: EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK · 1 OZ .999 SILVER · TWO DOLLARS. Both rims feature Scottsdale Mint's standard EC8 wavy radial security lines.
Reverse: The Mountain Chicken
On the back is the mountain chicken motif; the frog is in a resting pose on a rocky surface, facing to the right. There are also inscriptions on the reverse, The Mountain Chicken, Dominica and the year of issue.
The reverse side of the coin shows a detailed design of the mountain chicken, capturing its unique characteristics, including the large round body, its body colours, and the strong hind legs, all depicted in proof-like relief, while tree trunks and foliage suggest the lush rainforest environment in which Dominica's mountain chicken is found.
