2023 Silver 1 oz Niue Equilibrium BU

The Pressburg Mint of Bratislava produced the 6th annual release of the Equilibrium Series in 2023, a 1 oz Niue Equilibrium Silver .9999 Fine Coin. This is a significant milestone in the series as 2023 is the first year that Niue has conducted Equilibrium coins under the sovereign license of Niue, a self-governing island nation of the South Pacific under free association with the New Zealand government.

The design of the coin is inspired by the ancient Chinese idea of yin and yang, which is represented by the traditional Taijitu symbol, a yin yang circle with light and dark halves. This coin is legal tender in Niue with a face value of 2 Dollars (NZD) and is backed by the sovereign in addition to being of enduring philosophical and visual interest.

The Equilibrium Series — Six Years of Yin and Yang

The Equilibrium Series has, since 2018, had a brand-new design annually, each year developed by the Pressburg Mint, and always inspired by the motif of the two Yin Yang symbols. Every year the series asks the same philosophical questions and offers new interpretations through various art forms, thus providing collectors with a basis to continue to collect year after year while enjoying the continuity of the concept. The 2023 release not only features an all-new ornate Taijitu design, but also the first release of the series under Niue's lawful tender.

Pressburg Mint — Centuries of Slovakian Minting Heritage

The Pressburg Mint, (formally Bratislavská Mincovňa), is named after the former German name of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The history of the mint goes back to 1430, when Hungary's King Sigismund set up a mint in Bratislava, producing silver coins for more than 300 years. The modern Pressburg Mint was established in 2015, and stands as a revival of this Slovakian minting tradition, while at the same time using modern technology and design methods, the Pressburg Mint has also announced the minting of a 3D-printed coin, symbolizing the mint's devotion to both historical continuity and modern innovation.

Understanding Yin and Yang

The origins of yin and yang are not firmly established, but it apparently originated in Chinese cosmology before the 3rd century BC and was used to give rise to a school of philosophical thought. The basic concept is that dominant and receptive energies (yang and yin) working in harmony produce a flow and rhythm throughout nature. In the nature of countless complementary pairs, this is understood to describe light and shadow, fire and water, expansion and contraction, and others that can be understood to be fundamentally interconnected, with each of the forces being understood to have a trace of its complementary force.

This philosophy is visually represented by the Taijitu, the circular symbol most commonly associated with yin/yang, which consists of a circle divided into two sections: a light half and a dark half, with each half containing a small element of the other. In this visual detail this is the symbolism of there not being a force without its opposite, each has the seed of another in itself.

Obverse Design — The Public Seal of Niue

  • Includes the official Public Seal of Niue indicating that the coin is a legal tender.
  • The inner seal is surrounded by a decorative garland which symbolizes the 14 villages of Niue.
  • The inner circle in the ring is a decorative design that represents plants from the island.
  • The national motto 'Atua, Niue Tukulagi' ('God, Niue Eternally') is inscribed next to the crown on the seal.
  • The inscriptions on the coin are 'NIUE 2023' and '2 DOLLARS', indicating the year and the denomination.

Reverse Design — The Taijitu (Yin and Yang)

  • Represents an elaborate form of the ancient Taijitu symbol, which is half dark and half light, with a small dark or light dot in the middle.
  • Encircled by decorative floral trims and ornamentation along the edge.
  • The inscription on the coin reads 'EQUILIBRIUM' and '1 OZ FINE SILVER 9999,' indicating the coin's weight and purity.

Why Collect the Equilibrium Series?

  • A really good design that is a theme in itself, yin and yang has a depth of philosophical content that exceeds many decorative bullion themes.
  • Sovereign legal tender backing by Niue (not privately minted rounds).
  • A historically important mint, Pressburg Mint's history goes back to a mint in Bratislava that was founded in 1430, where silver coins have been minted for more than 300 years.
  • Only 100,000 were minted globally for this BU release making it easy to collect.
  • The 2023 release is a significant addition to the series, featuring a milestone release, the first Equilibrium coin minted under Niue's sovereign authority.
  • Also offered in various sizes, such as 1 oz and 1/10 oz gold versions in Proof-Like finish, giving collectors the option to collect the metal they like and the budget they can afford.
